Ernest was active in youth sports and excelled in track and field at both the New York School of Printing and the NY Police Athletic League.
In December of 1953, he enlisted in the United States Navy and faithfully served 21 years until retirement in 1974 with an Aviation career and the enlisted rank of Petty Officer First Class. His overseas tours included Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Guam, Korea with stateside tours in Lemoore, CA, Jacksonville, FL, Quonset Point, RI, New York, New York, and San Diego, CA. Some of his earned service medals include, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Medal, and the Navy Commendation Ribbon. In addition, he was awarded and decorated with the Bronze Star medal for his distinguished meritorious service of several combat tours in Vietnam.
In November 1974, he became a Correctional Officer at the San Diego Metro Correctional Center.
In January of 1978, he joined the US Customs and Border Protection Federal Law Enforcement Agency and served 18 years until his retirement in 1994. He was stationed in San Ysidro, CA for his full 18 year tenure.
In April of 1994, he relocated to Arizona where he spent the rest of his years until his passing. He was active in bowling leagues and enjoyed his favorite professional sports teams with family. His passion was his love of oldies but goodies music and was an avid collector.
He is survived by his wife Serafina Banks of 44 years, his children, Rochelle Crockett (Juan), Ernest Banks Jr. (Brenda), Anthony E. Banks (Theresa), Sean D. Banks (Danny), and Eric M. Banks. Also his Stepsons -Charles Pollack, Michael Pollack (Loretta), Jerry Pollack (Karla), and Steve Pollack. He was blessed with numerous grandchildren,great-grandchildren and great- great grandchildren.
A visitation for Ernest will be held Friday, July 28, 2023 from 12:30 PM at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary, 7924 North 59th Ave, Glendale, Arizona, with a funeral service will follow. A reception will be held after the service at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary.
