Bill was born on August 16, 1935 to William H. Maurer, Sr. and Sarah A. (Utsch) Maurer. He and his little sister, Patricia, grew up in in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The stories he shared about his youth often involved fond memories of his family, helping his father deliver milk in a horse drawn cart, working in his grandparents chocolate factory, and spending summers helping out at their marina in Cape May, NJ.
He spent his final year of high school at the Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida. After graduation he attended college for a two years. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for flying. He joined the Navy in 1955 through the NAVCAD program and began his flight training. By the end of his 25+ years of service, he had achieved the rank of Commander.
Bill had a successful career in the Navy flying a variety of aircraft. About the time of his last duty assignment, the commercial airline industry was in full swing and looking for experienced pilots. He pursued this opportunity and with his experience, easily met their requirements. In 1966 he left the active Navy and began his career in the commercial airline industry with TWA. During his TWA career his favorite route was flying over Greece. He often commented on the beauty of the ruins prior to landing.
Bill was always working to ensure that his family’s needs were taken care of. His adventurous spirit led him to a variety of activities. Among them were skydiving, skiing, motorcycles and whatever new challenge he could find.
He was preceded in death by his parents. His legacy is continued with his wife of 62 years Beverly Fay Maurer, children Jim (Nancy) of Redonda Beach, Ca, Sharon (Robert) Myers, Bill Maurer, Eric Maurer all of Kansas City, Mo, Andrew (Jacque) Maurer of Holt, Mo and his Sister Patricia (Rolf) Oscarsson, of Hudson, Ohio, his Godson Tage Oscarsson, 8 grandchildren, 9 great children and 2 great, great grandchildren and multiple nieces, nephews and many friends.
Service 11:00am Monday September 10, 2018 White Chapel Funeral Home, 6600 NE Antioch Rd Gladstone, MO 64119. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment with full military honors service to follow White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
