Born in Stirling, Scotland Sept. 27, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Hannah (Brimer) McNaughton. Mary was predeceased by her husband Lachlan J. Mark, son John, grandsons Jason and Fraser, 1 sister, and 5 brothers.
She is survived by her daughter Dianne (Duncan) St. John’s, grandsons Lachlan (Holly) Manitoba, Joel (Sherry) Nova Scotia, five great grandchildren, Brett, Matthew, Shelby, Ashton, and Maggie, daughter in law Tina MacPherson Nova Scotia, brother in law Brian (Evelyn) Ontario, sisters in law (Ada and Betty in Scotland and Jenny in Australia) many other relatives in Canada, Scotland and Australia, and friends in Newfoundland and Cape Breton.
After serving in the WAAF in WWII, Mary emigrated to Canada with her husband and young son in 1952 and made Glace Bay her home, moving to St. John’s a couple of years ago to be closer to her daughter. She will always be remembered as a loving, caring, strong and independent person who loved a good laugh. Having an avid sense of adventure, she enjoyed travelling the back roads of Cape Breton with her husband. Her hobbies included gardening, woodworking, sewing and knitting. She was a volunteer at the Town House in Glace Bay and an adherent to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Loyal to family and friends, Ma and Grandma gave us lots of great memories and she will be missed.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all staff at the Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion for their excellent care and friendship over the past couple of years. A heartfelt thank you is extended to the Cumbie and Richards families for their kindness and generosity.
At Mary’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial service and burial will take place at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Patten’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay. On-line condolences may be sent to www.pattenfuneral.com. Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
