Laura Jo (Berger) Asselin beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend passed away November 5, 2024, after a long illness. She leaves behind a legacy of creativity which she freely shared, and a void her family cannot fill.
Laura was born on August 20, 1952, in Scottsbluff. On June 7, 1969, she married Lon Asselin. Laura was the beloved mother to her two daughters, Angie (JR) Brester and Jill Asselin both of Gering.
She attended Gering High School and worked at Nebraska Western College (now WNCC) as a secretary for 13 years. For many years, she ran a seasonal holiday pop-up called LJ’s Funstuff at her home, which became an annual tradition eagerly anticipated by friends, family and neighbors. Throughout the year, Laura created beautiful holiday ornaments, crafts and decorations. She would then set her house up the weekend after Thanksgiving as a boutique, inviting other crafters to bring their items to sell. Laura then owned Prairie Florist Flower Shop for 5 years. She loved to paint and decorate and redecorate. No matter what she created, it was amazing!
Laura’s real pride and joy were her grandkids. She tried to attend all of their events. She just loved to watch them do their “thing.” Paije (Chris) Winkler, Payton Mooney, Justin (Tori) Brester, Brenden (Maddie) Brester, Carlee (Sage) Brester, great grandsons Brooks and Atlas Brester.
She was lucky to come from a big family who loved her very much. Her siblings include- Victorie McHenry, James Berger (Demaris), Robin Dean, Sue Tynan (Jerry), Teresa Drummond, Eric Berger (Shelley). Sisters and brothers-in-law Demaris Berger (James), Janna Smith (Randy), Kelly Asselin (GiGi), Randy Asselin (Julee), mother-in-law Audre Asselin. She also had numerous nieces and nephews and cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Laura is preceded in death by her infant son Justin, granddaughter Sydnee Ann Brester, sister Elizabeth (Lisa), parents Jack and (Toots) Arva Mae Berger, father-in-law Lew Asselin, numerous others.
Our mom and grandma will be greatly missed. She always made sure the holidays were over the moon for her daughters and continued it with her grandkids. She sewed anything and everything needed, she always had great advice, and worried about every dog in the world. Laura loved her own fur babies-every single white one of them! Peace.
Her prayer service will be held on Monday, November 11, 2024, at 10:00 am at Gering Memorial Chapel with Father Mike McDonald officiating. A lunch will follow at Christ the King, and everyone is welcome to join the Asselin family. Casual attire- pink if you have it.
Memorials may be given to the Panhandle Humane Society. Fond memories and condolences may be left at www.geringchapel.com.
