She was born on July 31, 1929 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Pauline (Ferguson) an Otto Wadsworth. Norma lived her entire young life in Wichita Falls until she met and married her first husband, James Curtis Barnett. Together they shared one daughter, Beverly Jean, who passed at birth, and were also proud parents of a son, Barry Curtis, and a daughter, Brenda Lee.
Norma attended Midwestern University and graduated from East Texas State University with a bachelors of science degree in speech and drama. She loved teaching and over a 33 year career she taught in Canton, Texas, Bay City, Texas, and Lubbock, Texas. Norma truly felt her calling was making a difference in the lives of the young people she taught.
She met and married her second husband, James “Jim” Charlton, while teaching in Bay City. They were married for 31 years before his passing in 2011. After their retirement from teaching, Norma and Jim moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where she spent 10 years as the manager of a local credit union they spent another 10 years in Grand Junction Colorado before finally coming home to Texas and settling in Georgetown. After Jim’s passing Norma enjoyed being a resident of The Oaks Retirement Living for several years and in more recent years a resident at Truwood by Merrill. She treasured the friendships she made at both communities.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Francis Ann, a daughter, Beverly Jean, her first husband, JC Barnett, and her second husband, Jim Charlton.
Norma’s memory is carried on by her survivors, including her son, Barry Barnett, of Georgetown, her daughter, Brenda Didier of Pukwana, SD, and her sister, Jean Wadsworth Barnett, of Plano. Her six grandchildren, their spouses and seven great grandchildren who will forever carry amazing memories of “Nana” in their hearts are Michael & Bonnie Barnett of Big Spring, Tiffany & John Peters of Stanton, Joshua Barnett & Meghan Landry of Georgetown, Ashley Barnett of Merkel, Curtis Carpenter of Pukwana, SD, David Carpenter of Hunkpati Oyate, SD and Jaxon Peters, Kaden Peters, Cason Barnett, Brenda-Lee Carpenter, Naomi Carpenter, Noah Carpenter, and Raelee Carpenter. She is also survived by two step sons, Bill (Ruby) Charlton and Joe (Maryann) Charlton and their families as well as several extended nieces, nephews and friends that were more like family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 10 AM at Crestview Baptist Church in Georgetown. Floral tributes can be scheduled for delivery directly to the church on Friday the 21st from 8am to 12 noon or on Saturday morning before the service.
