George W. Harrison, 95, passed away at the home of a dear friend, Deanie Culbert, on Tuesday, December 3, 2019. Per his request, there will be no formal service, however, friends and family are invited to Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX, on Friday, December 13th at 10:30 A.M. where Military funeral honors will be performed.
George was born in Shreveport, LA to James David Harrison and Mary Corrine Harrison. He graduated from high school and joined the Navy at the beginning of WWII, and served as a Gunners Mate on the USS Oregon City, the USS Albany, and the USS Fargo. George received the following ribbons: WWII Victory (USN), European African (USN), Navy Occupation (USN), Navy Good Conduct (USN), and 2 Battle Stars.
He was honorably discharged Dec 7, 1948, one of the “Greatest Generation”. George became a Mason and worked his way up in the Texas Labor Movement attaining the status of Grand Lodge Representative for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
George married Mary Jo Zimmerman and they lovingly helped raised three children, Gary, Kenneth, and Georgie Gail. George told his family he had lived a long and happy life and having spent much of it travelling the world with the woman he loved. George was preceded in death by Mary Jo and he looked forward to being reunited with her.
George is survived by his son, Gary Harrison; 4 grandchildren, Jessica Holy, Jeffrey Harrison, Natalie Duke, and Kenneth Ray Harrison Jr.; and a daughter in law, Elaine Harrison.
At the end, George Harrison left this world, a better place than he found it.
