Darryle Keith Mooney was born May 25,1963 in San Antonio, Texas. He went to be with the Lord on January 14, 2024. He was raised by his loving parents, George and Verlene Mooney. He was the second youngest of their six children. He attended Lyndon B. Johnson Elementary, Elizabeth T. Wrenn Junior High and Memorial High School where he played on the varsity basketball and football teams which won many district and regional championships. Also, he was first chair Captain for the trombone section for his high school marching and orchestra band. He attended Prairie View A&M University and Austin Community College where he received his Master HVAC associate degree. He also furthered his education through obtaining Facilities Management certification and training at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute – Port Aransas.
Upon graduation he relocated to Austin, Texas and later Pflugerville, Texas where he raised his family and sought fellowship at St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an usher. Darryle was also a team coach, mentor, and supportive parent for the various sports they excelled in leading them to regional and state championships. Due to their success, his children received several college scholarships to play sports and earn their degrees.
Darryle accepted a position with the University of Texas at Austin where he worked for more than 20 years. Upon his retirement from the university, he accepted a position with the City of Austin Convention Center where he worked another 20 years retiring as Manager of Facilities Operations in which he also retired. When searching for a place to retire, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he then accepted a position at Gateway Community College managing campus operations.
Darryle was a very adventurous person who loved the outdoor lifestyle. This led him to love vacationing with his children at beaches and various campgrounds in the Texas Hill Country and Texas coastal areas. Because of his love for the outdoors, he became a motorcycle aficionado who loved to ride his many Harley-Davidsons on the weekends to motorcycle rallies and destinations in Arizona, Colorado, Texas, and Utah. On many of this motorcycle trips he took you could find him amongst over 100 riders from across the United States to make the journey with him. Darryle was a sports enthusiast who loved attending college and professional basketball and football games, and a die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan.
Darryle loved people and people loved Darryle!
He will truly be missed, but we know he is in the arms of Our Lord.
He is preceded in death by his father, George M Mooney, brother George G Mooney, and son Isaac Keith Mooney. He leaves to cherish his memory with his mother Verlene M. Mooney; children Amanda (Jeremy), Christie, and Deliah (Julius); his grandchild Julianna; brother Matthew, sisters Sharon (Paul), Verlena (Daryl Sr.), Toni (Morris); niece Brieonne; nephews Daryl and Grant, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. The family would like to thank the Reverend Beth Key for her continuous love and support for the Mooney family and other numerous angels.
A graveside service for Darryle will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Round Rock Cemetery, 1100 Sam Bass Rd, Round Rock, TX 78681.
