Born in Stanley, NC, Mary Jane graduated from Hudson High School in 1961, after which she studied Art. Living in Hickory, NC she was employed in the photography industry as a typographer for Hix Photography. Mary Jane valued the community, being a long term volunteer for the American Red Cross, Frye Regional Hospital and Frye Hospitality House and was once recognized for volunteering for over 10 years. She was an avid traveler and sports car enthusiast, driving 1000’s of miles exploring the US in her MGB and other British sports cars, attending events such as SCCA races and the Chimney Rock Hill Climb.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents Archie and Stella Sherrill of Stanley, NC.
She is survived by her husband, Weyburn Smith of Hickory, NC, son Jeffrey Smith of Hickory, NC, daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Eric Swanger of Huntersville, NC, sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Sam Pritchard of Denver, NC, and a brother, Larry Sherrill of Denver, NC. She is also survived by a niece – Michelle Pritchard of Denver, NC, a nephew – Tim Keener of Denver, NC, and 3 grandchildren – Erika Swanger of North Augusta, SC, Patrick Swanger of Huntersville, NC and Caroline Swanger of Huntersville, NC.
A private family service will be held.
