Roger Mims, a devoted husband, loving father, faithful Christian, and respected coach, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, and community service.
Born to Willie and Kathryn J. Mims, Roger was a man whose life was marked by dedication, integrity, and a deep love for others. He worked tirelessly in the coal mines for 34 years, providing for his family with strength and resilience. Outside the mines, his passion was coaching and mentoring young people. From 1972 to 1996, he coached football, baseball, and occasionally basketball at West Birmingham Christian, followed by a beloved tenure at Sumiton Christian School from 1997 to 2009. To countless young men and women, he was more than a coach—he was a father figure, a mentor, and a steady example of Christian leadership.
Roger's greatest joy, however, was his family. He was married to the love of his life, Joan Mims, for 60 beautiful years. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering faith. Roger was a faithful leader and active member at Decatur Highway Church of Christ, where he served and inspired others with humility and grace.
Roger was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan Mims; his parents, Willie and Kathryn J. Mims; and his brother, Gary Mims.
Roger is survived by his children; son, Scott Mims, and his wife Kim Mims; daughter, Denise Johnson, and her husband Brian Johnson; grandchildren Chandler Barber (Jackson), Savannah Mims, Connor Mims, Parker Mims, Haley James (Jared), Karlee Johnson, and Jeremiah Johnson; great-grandchildren, Cody and Aubrey; Sister-in-law, Faye Mims; and a special “like a son,” Taylor Baggett.
Roger Mims leaves behind a powerful legacy of love, faith, and selfless service. His impact will live on through the many lives he touched—with a kind word, a coach’s guidance, a faithful prayer, or a father’s embrace. He ran his race well and is now at peace in the arms of his Savior.
A visitation for Roger will be held Sunday, April 27, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, 2029 Decatur Highway, Gardendale, Alabama. A funeral service will occur Monday, April 28, 2025 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, followed by his burial in Crestview Memorial Gardens, 4304 Johnson Street, Adamsville, Alabama.
