Mary Day Smith

Mary was born February 16, 1952 in Birmingham, Alabama to Mr and Mrs Charles Smith. She grew up in the Forestdale community in west Birmingham graduating from Minor High School. Mary earned the Bachelor of Science Degree and Masters Degree from the University of Montevallo. She served as a public school teacher in Jefferson County teaching elementary PE and science classes. Additionally, Mary was a guidance counselor. Upon her retirement from public schools, Mary enjoyed working as an administrative assistant at her church, Gardendale Mount Vernon United Methodist.

Mary loved her dogs and always had at least one furry friend around the house. She also loved and treasured her family, especially her nieces and nephews. At Christmas, Mary always had a series of gifts for each of those nieces and nephews to open, one day at a time, as a countdown to the big Christmas morning visit from Santa. Holidays were very special to Mary and she shared that joy with her family.

Mary loved music as well and enjoyed many years singing in the choirs of the churches she attended. She was a Christian believer who put her faith and trust in Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, Charles Smith and by her sister-in-law, Karen Smith.

She is survived by her mother, Inez Smith; her two brothers, Chuck Smith (wife, Janet), George Smith; her sister, Sue Beck (husband John); a host of nephews and nieces including Brian Smith (wife Louise), Jana Brasfield (husband Andrew), Jessica Hauber (husband Matt), Erin Atchison (husband Caleb), Joel Beck (wife Sarah) and Laura Beck. Mary also is survived by 8 great nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 9 at Ridouts of Gardendale Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 10am and services will follow at 11am.
