August 23, 1935 - June 16, 2021
Harvey Malcolm Fields was born and raised in Crocker Junction, Alabama. He is preceded in death by his parents Bess Fields and Thelma Lee Fields; his siblings, Odell Fields Goodwin, Sam Fields, Lyra Johnston, and Viola Higginbotham, and his beloved wife, Jan Mitchell Fields. He is survived by his loving daughters, Jennifer Fields (Steve McGinty and son Alex McGinty) and Lauren Fields Gough (Steve Gough); his precious grandson, Fischer Harvey Gough; his sisters, Dortha Holdsomback, Lola Yeager, Oma Parker, and Terry Nicholson; nephew, David Mitchell, III, and niece, Tiffany Mitchell Wiginton, and many, many other nieces and nephews.
Harvey was a graduate of Mortimer Jordan High School, class of 1953. He was awarded the title best personality by his classmates and was proud to serve as student body president. He played high school football and was a standout on the varsity basketball team. It was there that he met and fell in love with Jan Mitchell Fields, driving her home from senior play practice. They were married on August 23, 1958, at West End Church of Christ.
As a young man, he served in the United States Air National Guard. In the late 1950’s, he went to work for Dexter Pest Control Company in Homewood. He established his own exterminating company, A-1 Pest Control, circa 1960. For over fifty years he personally provided excellent service to his customers whom he considered his friends. He was also a real estate investor who enjoyed buying property and houses and renovating and maintaining the homes for families. He was very pleased in 2018 when his commercial property, Fields Corner, LLC, in Gardendale became home to Brookwood Medical Center.
Harvey lived in Gardendale, Alabama, all of his adult life and supported his community in numerous ways. He loved Gardendale High School sports and even coached the Bragg Junior High School and Gardendale High School gymnastics teams when his daughter Lauren competed. He was a Gardendale High School football booster for many years. In the 2015 season he had reason to have a renewed interest in the team, and in spite of failing health, he attended all the home games to watch Alex McGinty play. He enjoyed seeing his friends and proudly cheering on the Rockets. He was an avid fan of Atlanta Braves baseball and all University of Alabama sports, especially football.
Harvey was a faithful husband for more than sixty years and was the best daddy and granddaddy in the world. He devoted his life to his wife and his daughters. He was immensely proud of his grandson, Fischer, who was his best buddy and the “apple of his eye.”
Harvey attended the Mount Olive Church of Christ for many years. He was baptized into Christ in his front yard on May 15, 2020. His baptism served as an inspiration to many.
Harvey is greatly loved and missed by his family and friends, as well as his wonderful caregivers, Jennifer Goodson, Tina Harris, Julie Burr, Keshia Reid, and Nichole Blakeney, who alongside his daughters, took exceptional care of him. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to them for their love and attentiveness. The family also wishes to say thank you to Dana Lowery, Lisa Compton, Dee Burgett, and Chad Elliott of Comfort Care in Jasper for the love and support they have given to the family, and to UAB Gereatric Housecall, especially Kathleen Shields and Chaeli Lawson, for providing excellent care.
A graveside service will be held at Oakwood Memorial Gardens on Monday, June 21, 2021 at 1:00 PM.
