Harold L. Smith, age 85 of Gardendale, AL passed away on Thursday, November 12th, 2015. Mr. Smith served his country proudly retiring from the U S Army with more than 20 years of service. He fought in the Vietnam Conflict, served in the 82nd and the 101st Airborne Divisions, served in the Rifleman’s Brigade in the 3rd Armor Division, and was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. He was very involved for many years with Fultondale’s American Legion as well as the VFW. Mr. Smith was very instrumental in the dedication of the Veteran’s Memorial in the City of Fultondale. He was a longtime member and a Deacon with Central Baptist Church and owned and operated his Home Improvement business in the Birmingham area for years. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Leslie Smith, Clyde Smith, Bobby Smith, and Major Smith; and sisters, Ruby Casey and Barbara Malone. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mavis Painter Smith; three sons, David Smith (Judy), Russell Smith (Barbara), and Keith Smith (Mary); his daughter, Wendy Ann Stewart; special close nephews, Terry Painter, Bruce Painter, Troy Painter, and Brett Painter; a brother, Homer Smith; sister, Grace Bailey; his grandchildren; Amy McCoy, Melissa Moore, Leslie Smith, Shelly Chaudhari, Luke Smith, Micah Smith; step-grandchildren, April Birchfield, Thomas Clark, and Robby Clark; great grandchildren, Joshua McCoy, Kendall McCoy, Sawyer Moore; step-grandchildren, Clay Birchfield, Caleb Birchfield, Will Birchfield, Ela Birchfield, Aidan Clark, Baylee Clark, Alyssa Gore, and Gabe Clark.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 14, at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel at 12 noon with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Gardens with VFW Honors. Rev. Harold McClendon will officiate services.
