Cherrell, of Warrior, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. She graduated, from Samford University, Magna Cum Laude, and earned a master’s degree in Library Science at the University of Alabama. She worked for Jefferson County Schools as a teacher and librarian for 26 years. After retiring she worked tirelessly as a volunteer for multiple organizations. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and she was a faithful Christian who loved the Lord and served in the Baptist church.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, William Eolin Burkett; parents, William and Willie Creel and one great grandchild.
She is survived by her five children, Michael E. Burkett (Ginger), Pam Horton (Joseph), Janet Gaines, Mark Burkett (Leigh), and Bill Burkett (Sandy); sisters, Willene Little (Fred) and Daphne Mulvehill (J.C.); 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter a host of friends.
The family would like to thank the Gentiva Hospice nurses for the excellent care they gave our mother. Special thanks to Louise Russell for the many years of loving care she has given our precious Mamah.
A visitation will be held at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel on Tuesday, Feb 14th, beginning at 1:00pm; funeral at 2:30pm followed by her burial in Oakwood Memorial Gardens, Gardendale, AL. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Mortimer Jordan High School for the William E. Burkett and Cherrell C. Burkett Scholarship Fund.
