Charlie was a graduate of Phillips High School, Jefferson State Community College, and University of Montevallo. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during Vietnam where he served as Police Security. Charlie then served his community with the Birmingham Police Department for 23 years serving as Homicide Detective for 8 years and Captain of the North Precinct; then he became Chief of Police for Graysville Police Department; and later a Bailiff for the State of Alabama. He is a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
He loved to keep up with all the latest national and local news, while avidly studying U.S. History. He loved to watch the Alabama Crimson Tide take the football field on Saturdays while listening to broadcaster Eli Gold call the game. Charlie was a big fan of radio and passionately supported his son, Tim, in both his radio career and in the move of joining “The Next Round” digital media team. He was extremely proud of his daughter Carla’s contributions to his medical care and his son Sam’s unwavering loyalty during times of need. He selflessly dedicated time away from his personal interests by becoming a devoted foster parent. Charlie enjoyed vacationing with his family at the beach, entertaining the entire family as the irreplaceable emcee of bingo nights, and being a beloved dog parent to Coco the Chiweenie.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Cecelia Schillaci Melton; his children, Carla Roberts (Jeff), Samuel Melton, and Timothy Melton (Felecia); his grandchildren, Josephine Wilbourn, Jena Wilbourn, Diana Wilbourn, Anthony Wilbourn, Chloe Melton, Kaylea Roberts, Ian Roberts, and Amber Mobley; his sisters, Patsy McGuirk (Joe), and Susan Courington (David); and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel with a Celebration of Life Graveside at Oakwood Memorial Gardens at 3:00 pm. Serving as pallbearers will be Josh Courington, Daniel Courington, Jake Schillaci, Jeff Roberts, Tim Melton, Jon Lunceford, Brandon Rogers, and Cohen Jordan.
