Betty Bass Thompson, a long-time resident of Gardendale AL. went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday the 16th of April. Betty was 93 years old and lived life to the very fullest. Born on February 18th, 1927 Betty was an only child where she grew up in North Birmingham and graduated with honors from Phillips High School at the age of 16.
At the age of 18 Betty married the love of her life, Samuel Thompson in 1945. They started a family and Betty was a devoted wife and dedicated mother to 3 children (Jackie, Robert and Lee). As a beloved and active member of her community, Betty was truly humbled when she was awarded the Citizen Of The Year Award in 1962 by the Gardendale Chamber Of Commerce. She worked as the registar at Mortimer Jordan High School until her retirement in addition to helping her beloved husband Samuel Thompson in starting Oak Wood Cemetary. One of Betty's passion's in life was gardening. Regarded as a well respected member of the gardending community, Betty served as the President of the Garden Club, was a Master Flower Show Judge and was the proud recipient on multiple occasions of the Gardendale Yard Of The Month Award. Known as an avid world traveler, Betty accounted Paris as her favorite city. Betty was a longtime member of Gardendale Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church.
As a charter member of Cahaba Ridge Independent Living she enjoyed three years there and dearly loved her caregivers "Net" and "Brie:.
She is survived by her 3 loving children, Jackie Tanner (Larry Worden), Robert (Tommy) Thompson (Maryjane), Lee Thompson (Lynn); 6 Grandchildren: Chris Moore, Susanna Moore, Charlotte Sizemore (David), Jeana Lee Thompson, Nicholas Thompson (Claire) and Alexander Thompson (Caroline Williams); 3 Great Grandchildren: Bebe Love Moore, Jack Boyd Moore and Frances Louise Sizemore.
Due to social distancing the funeral will be immediate family only.
