Lawrence Joseph Looney, 86, died at home in Palos Verdes Estates, California, surrounded by his loving family on June 11, 2024. Larry was a longtime resident of Andover, Massachusetts, and most recently lived near his daughters in Mercer Island, Washington and Southern California. Larry spent a lifetime of summers at beautiful Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire.
Larry was the son of William and Agnes Looney of Medford, MA. He attended public schools in Medford and graduated from Merrimack College with a BA in Economics in 1960. Larry then went on to get a graduate degree in Economics from Boston College and taught at Merrimack College in North Andover for more than 40 years. At Merrimack, he served as the Chair of the Economics Department for twenty years, was on many committees and actively participated in the Faculty Senate. In 1990, he was awarded the Thomas P Hogan award for Excellence in Collegiate Governance. Larry was known for his love of teaching in the classroom when chalk was used on a blackboard. Exams were given in blue books with long essays and graphs for answers. He corrected thousands of tests and left his comments, corrections and encouragements with a classic red pen. Larry enjoyed watching his students succeed in the classroom and also in life. Teaching was his passion and it showed.
Larry leaves his three children and their spouses, Rosella and John Loendorf of Norwalk CT, Jennifer and Timothy Hart of Palos Verdes Estates CA, and Bryan and Lottie Looney of Arvada CO. As a dad, Larry taught his children about unconditional love and the virtue of perseverance. He had a listening ear, sound advice and big words of encouragement for us all. Our Dad also loved watching his grandchildren make their way in life. “Bampie” leaves his much-loved grandchildren, Mary-Kate, Kevin, Sarah, Shaela, Molly, Grace and Owen. Larry also leaves his former wife and best friend, Margaret Rosella Looney.
Larry was predeceased by his siblings Patricia MacFaden, Peter Looney, Robert Looney and William Looney and leaves many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will take place on July 12 at 2:00 pm at Lakeside Cemetery, at the intersection of Rt. 103A and Rt 103 in Newbury NH. All are welcome.
