Patricia Lucille Whamond Leyes passed away on Monday, August 3 at age 92 after a stay at a skilled nursing facility. Patricia maintained a cheerful attitude until the end and passed peacefully the morning after her 92nd birthday.
Patricia was born in Chicago, Illinois to Russell and Lucille Whamond. She was married to Clarence “Lee” Leyes for 49 years and they settled in Garden Grove, California. Pat attended St. Polycarp and St. Columban Catholic Church.
Pat worked for 50 years at CR&R, Inc. starting as a bookkeeper and rising through the company to become Senior Vice President. She handled everything financial including payroll, billing, accounts payable, insurance, banking, and taxes. She was a teacher and mentor to everyone who worked in the offices. She was proud to help CR&R grow from a local waste disposal company with two trucks to one of Southern California's most innovative and successful waste and recycling collection companies, serving more than 3 million people and over 25,000 businesses throughout Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Imperial and Riverside counties, in addition to operations in other western states.
Pat had many volunteer roles throughout her life, mostly revolving around her children. She was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts, Bobby Sox Softball, and Epsilon Sigma Alpha International philanthropic sorority. She held many leadership and board positions receiving recognition of her contributions including the Girl Scout ‘Thanks Badge.’
Pat is survived by her son Scott, her son Mark and his wife Wanda, and her daughter Kathy and her husband David and their son Nate, her only grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Betty Wurtz and family.
Due to the current environment of Coronavirus Restrictions, there was no formal funeral or visitation. After a graveside service, she was buried next to her husband Lee at Magnolia Memorial Park in Garden Grove located less than a mile from her home where she lived for 64 years.
