Bill was a 1951 graduate of Linden McKinley High School in Columbus. Following that, he served his country for 2 years in the US Navy aboard Destroyer Escort USS Earl K. Olsen as a Navy Petty Officer 1st Class. His primary job was a diesel engine mechanic, but he also served as a fireman. After 2 years of active enlistment, he returned home to Columbus and continued his service as a reserve. Sometime later, he started with the US Mail service and walked a route for 13 years as a mail carrier. He and Patty met around that time and married in 1958. In 1969 he launched a State Farm Insurance Agency, and retired from that in 2002.
Loyal and Dedicated. If you look up those words in the dictionary, you’ll see Bill’s picture.
A long-standing member of Linden Church of Christ, he served as both a Deacon and an Elder, and together with wife Patty, they led youth group for many years. Most recently he attended and served at Powell Christian Church.
Bill loved camping with Patty, and a group of camping buddies, and he was always in search of a bigger, better camper for their adventures. As a long-standing member of the FOPA, he participated in many events as a Keystone Kop, and he loved taking his grandkids fishing at the lodge in Gahanna.
Bill was a dedicated caregiver to Patty for many years, even learning to do her dialysis at home. In the later years, most evenings would find him sitting in his garage with a supply of dog biscuits, happily feeding all the neighborhood dogs.
Not one for sitting idle, he often puttered around the house, in the kitchen or in the garage, whistling nameless tunes as he did so.
The family would like to give a huge hug & thank you to Bill’s friends & neighbors Terry Magyar, Beth & Scott Fitzgerald, Carla Hamilton and Ken Wunderlin, for your many hours of service to keep Bill in his home, where he wanted to be, for as long as possible. Also thank you to the staff at Select Specialty Hospital for their professional and attentive care of Bill in his final days.
A memorial service will be held at Schoedinger Margarum in Gahanna at 12:30 on November 10. Family will receive visitors beginning at 11:00. A private burial will be conducted at Glen Rest Memorial Cemetery in Reynoldsburg. In lieu of flowers, Bill would be pleased to know that donations were made to Powell Christian Church.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents Phillip and Helen Zourdos, his sister Kathleen Page, and his beloved wife Patty. He is survived by Children Jill (Dave) Shivers, Bill (Gail) Zourdos, & Chris (Samra) Zourdos; grandchildren Alyssa Shivers, Betsy (Darren) Meyers, Cari (James) Williams, Nick (Leah) Zourdos, Ryann (Andrew) Wingeier, and Alex Zourdos (Jenna Mekolites); four great-grandchildren, Titus & Shiloh Meyers, Grace Wingeier, and Ronan Williams, and numerous nieces and nephews.
