Nancy Ann Behrens Hess Tillinghast (81) went to be with the Lord on 1-25-23 surrounded by her loving family. She was the only child of George L Behrens and Dorothy Gay Goodman Behrens. She graduated from Lancaster high school in 1959 and went on to nursing school when Grant had a 2+2 bachelor degree program. She became an RN, a profession of service perfect for her. She married Charles Eugene Hess on 11-4-1962 and had 4 children. Greg (Tresa) Hess, Julie (Neil) Maynard, Kevin Hess and Christopher (Lisa) Hess. She had a wonderful career as a nurse serving primarily the elderly population as the Director of Nursing at Crestview Manor in Lancaster for many years, then at Westminster Thurber in Columbus, and finally working with home health for Senior Independence. She had divorced Charles and remarried Ralph Tillinghast on 5-9-1983. After he passed away she found the true love of her life in Paul Carmichael III and they married 1-07-97. Joining the family were her step children Joy Carmichael, Lea (Major) Cobb and Paul Carmichael IV. She continued working until her retirement June 2010 and soon after Paul retired his business Plants by Paul. Nancy and Paul enjoyed traveling all over the US usually anywhere a casino was located where they enjoyed the "penny slots". They loved sports, game show network and Hallmark station where they could be found on occasion holding hands watching the "sappy love stories". In 2013 she had a serious medical event almost leading to her death causing her to be wheelchair bound and the next 10 years would be more challenging. But Paul always stood by her side and took care of her even as the days were becoming more difficult for both of them. She was loved by her family whom she adored. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Paul; her children and step children; 18 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and along with numerous friends and past co-workers.
The family is grateful to the staff of Capital City Hospice for the compassionate care provided to her and the family. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Capital City Hospice.
