William Arthur (Art) Turner passed away peacefully at his home on November 28, 2022. The family will receive visitors from 1 pm until 2 pm on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the Collier-Butler Chapel in Gadsden. A service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Tommy Marshall and Rev. Don Arnold officiating. Burial will follow at Williams Southside Memorial Park.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Mae Langdon Turner; his wife, Doris Harper Turner; and siblings Arnold Turner, Mary Anne King, Alice Truitt, Robert Turner and Eugene Turner.
He is survived by his brother, Levi Turner Jr., children Rose Turner Pate (Chip), Mark Turner (Lola) and Robin Turner Singh (Davinder); grandsons Kirby Pate, Bradley Singh and Jeremy Singh; and beloved companion Rebecca Hilleke.
Art was born on June 1, 1931 in Deese, Kentucky in Jackson County. He attended Annville Institute in Annville, Kentucky and graduated from Tyner High School. After completing a toolmaker apprentice program in Dayton, Ohio, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1954-58.
He moved to Gadsden with his young family in 1958 to work as a toolmaker. He worked for several local companies before his retirement.
A faithful member of The Tabernacle for over 50 years, “Brother Art” led worship, taught Sunday school and preached as long as his health allowed. He was active in community faith groups for many years, including the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship and the George Williams Memorial Prayer Group.
Known for his humor and kindness, Art had many friends throughout North Alabama. He will be remembered by all for his favorite phrase, “Think eternal!”
Flowers are appreciated; memorial gifts may also be made to The Tabernacle or to Gideons International.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Leslie, Herbert Buice, Jerome Wilkins, Mickey Durham, Jason Durham and Terry Workman.
