William "Bart" Bartley Scott

William Bartley Scott (Bart) peacefully passed away at home on Sunday, March 12, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was the recipient of a double lung transplant in 2021 and enjoyed an additional 18 months of life, thanks to an Organ Donor, the amazing Advanced Lung Team at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Bart was known for his fiery spirit, quick wit, love of life, beautiful singing voice, love of music, and dry sense of humor. He was a 1973 graduate of Gadsden High School and an Auburn University 1977 Alumni. He loved ALL things Auburn!

Bart entered the work force as a CPA at Ernst and Young and at just 26 years of age became the Comptroller and then CFO at Baptist Memorial Hospital Gadsden. He worked for several years in Administration at Gadsden Health and Rehab Center and then moved on to his most rewarding position as Co-Owner and Operator of Meadowood Retirement Village. He sold the business in 2017 and officially retired to pursue his loves of golfing, boating, beaching, and anything fun with friends, whom he loved dearly. His retirement was abruptly cut short with the diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2020.

Bart was preceded in death by his parents, J.L. and Mary Scott, his sister Sandra Crowell, and his precious niece Carrie Scott, with whom he shared a special bond. He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Myra Mayes Scott, his two beautiful girls, Hillary Scott Agricola (John) and Erin Scott Freeman (David), he shared with his high school sweetheart, Sheree Bowlen Martin (Brett.) Bart’s life changed with the births' of his precious grandchildren, Hadley Marie Freeman and John Disque Agricola III (Trey). They were truly the apples of his eye. Bart was an amazing, supportive stepdad and friend to Michael Bolton (Katie) and Madison Bolton and lived to welcome the arrival of his third grandchild, Eloise Katherine Bolton, just 3 months ago. Bart is also survived by his older brother and partner in crime, John Scott (Deb) and numerous nephews and nieces, all of whom he loved dearly and regularly gave a hard time! He also shared a special bond with his in-laws, Ragan and Beverly Godfrey.

Bart had a very large circle of friends and family, too many to name, who loved and supported him and his family through the transplant journey. He recounted his best times were on the golf course at The Gadsden Country Club, playing cards in the men’s grill, singing his favorite tunes on the balcony of his beach home, and sitting on his back porch watching sports. He also had wonderful memories of all the Auburn football games he attended and remembered every detail of each win or loss. Bart truly lived life to the fullest.

A private family gathering will be held at Collier Butler Funeral Home on Friday, March 17th at 1:00 p.m. All friends are invited to join us for a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, March 18th, at 12:00 Noon, at First United Methodist Church Gadsden.

In lieu of flowers, the family will receive donations for the Lung Patient Assistance Program of Vanderbilt University Medical Center with checks made payable to Gift and Donor Services. Donations can be mailed to 3946 Rose Lane, Gadsden AL 35907 or brought to the Celebration of Life Service. These funds will be presented as a single gift in memory of Bart and will be used to help transplant patients who cannot afford treatment, medications, and housing.

Go rest high on that mountain Bart, with your cherished dog Millie and those who went before you. We shall one day be reunited, in Jesus precious name.
