Larry Raymond Thompson, age 70, of Gadsden, Alabama passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2pm on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at Collier Butler Funeral Home followed by a memorial service at 2pm. Dr. Gary Ashley and Rev. Randy B. Kelly will officiate. Collier Butler Funeral Home will direct service.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Elaine Long Thompson; daughter Joana Celene Thompson; his beloved grandson Carson Reed McCreless; sister Judy Pitts; brother Jimmy Thompson (Mary Jo Thompson); nieces Traci Rice (Jason Rice), Teresa McDowell( Dr. Bill McDowell), and Maridi Huggins(Daniel Huggins); nephew William Cole Thompson; chosen daughter Laura Renea Martin; brother in law Wayne Long; many other nieces and nephews; Special Friends Ronnie Reed, Ralph Burke, Kevin Sanford, Connie Klein, Ken Coplin, Barbara Suttles, Rev. Randy B. Kelly, Charles "Chuck" Tucker, Kathy Back, Billy Yates, Norma Jean Fortenberry, and special neighbors Ben and Linda Mashburn and Ted and Pam.
Mr. Thompson is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Elizabeth Thompson; mother and father in law Foster and Avis Long; sister Jonie Lynn Thompson; brother in law Keith Pitts; sister in law Pat Long; and special friend Barbara Reed.
Mr. Thompson was a life long resident of Gadsden. He was a graduate of Emma Sansom High School and was a veteran of the US Army, having served in Vietnam. He loved his community, his family and friends, but most especially his grandson Carson and his dog Cosmo. Larry had the best heart and would help anyone at anytime. He never met a stranger and would give you the shirt of his back. Larry had a love for politics and enjoyed a good debate. He was a member of Dwight Baptist Church. Larry served his community in many ways: he was on the Community Development Board, member of ADC, and the Democratic party.
Larry was a blessing to everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed.
Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Reed, Chuck Tucker, Dr. B.J. Patel, Dr. Jaiswal; Kevin Stanford and all of the nurses, doctors, and staff at UAB Hospital, and the nurses, doctors, and staff of Gadsden Regional Medical Center ER.
