Chris was born on December 11th, 1962 in Gadsden, Alabama, son of the late Dwight L. Owens and the late Ruby N.J. Owens. In addition to his mother and father, Chris was preceded in death by his sister Patsy O. Gober; nephew Mikie Gober; and cousin Michelle Garbe.
Chris grew up with a love of God, music, and people. His career and life accomplishments really reflected that. He first attended Samford University in 1980 where he received a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and History. He then attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1984 where he became a master of church music and vocal performance. Lastly, he attended University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music to continue his education in music.
After college, Chris spent many years in a musical career. He was a talented opera singer, and he travelled around the world sharing his gift of music. He was an apprentice artist of the Santa Fe Opera and the Houston Grand Opera. He then became a principal artist with the Washington National Opera, and sang with them for almost nine years.
After a career of travel, Chris decided that he wanted to settle down in Charlottesville, VA. He became a professor of music at the University of Virginia in 2007. He then became an insurance agent, and later, a financial advisor with Mutual of Omaha in 2009. He loved his work in the insurance and financial business, and continued to do this for 14 years up until a couple of weeks before his death.
Chris was a proud believer in the Lord. He spent his entire life studying the Bible and working on his spiritual growth. He also ministered to anyone he encountered with his unwavering faith. He was a Gideon Brother for many years, as well as a Master Mason. He was also an active member of Palmyra United Methodist Church.
Chris leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews; as well as many cherished friends that he considered family.
A funeral service will be held at Palmyra United Methodist Church on January 15th, 2024 at 5pm. There will also be a graveside service at Crestwood Cemetery in Gadsden, Alabama on Saturday January 20th, 2024 at 1pm.
