Bill was born and raised in Walnut Grove, Alabama. He graduated from Jacksonville State University in 1955 with degrees in Business Administration and Economics. Bill was a US Army veteran who served in Alaska in the 1950s.
Bill was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 33 years. Upon retirement he started a new career at Gadsden State Community College, working in the computer labs to repair computers and install software programs, both on the main Gadsden State campus and the satellite location in Anniston. He enjoyed the work very much and even earned a second retirement from the State of Alabama.
Bill was an active member and deacon of East Gadsden Baptist Church. He served on several committees, taught Sunday School and sponsored the Young at Heart program for senior church members. In the 70’s and 80’s he drove the church bus on numerous trips across the US and into Canada, logging thousands of miles. Bill also served the church in other ways behind the scenes, notably in helping transcribe the hymn lyrics for the sanctuary screens, and helping to run the system during services.
Bill is survived by his widow Earlene, to whom he was married for 69 years. He is also survived by his daughter Debra Stanfield King, her husband Andy King, their three daughters Carla King, Dr. Danielle King, Allison Scott and her husband Jason. He had one great-grandson - Carla’s son Andrew Kent of Smyrna, Georgia.
Bill is also survived by his son Rex Stanfield of Austin, Texas, and Rex’s son Benjamin Stanfield of Rhode Island.
