Mary came into this world at a time when it was common for Down syndrome babies to be institutionalized. That was the furthest thought in the minds of her parents, Mary and Dick Buck. She was raised just like their other five children. She had determination and will like no other and would not let her limitations hold her back. When she put her mind to something, she could move mountains. In her own words, she was "high-functioning". Mary loved family get-together's, whether it was a wedding, anniversary, birthday or other holiday, she was always prepared to make a toast, sing a song or bust a move - she owned the stage (and owned any nearby microphone)! She wore her heart on her sleeve. You always knew what Mary was feeling or thinking and there was never a hidden agenda. She was an active participant in Special Olympics for many years. She was always a worthy competitor and won many medals. In 1984, she was crowned Special Olympics queen and was invited to ride in the Placentia Heritage Days parade. She will be missed for her unpredictable off-the cuff remarks and the joy and laughter that she brought to family and close friends. Funeral Mass will be 10 AM Sat. Feb 7, 2015 at St. Martin Catholic Church, Yorba Linda with a burial following at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Orange. In lieu of flowers donations can be made the Special Olympics Foundation of Southern California.
