William Lauer was born on July 20, 1931 in Queens, N.Y. He graduated in 1953 from Queens College with a degree in mathematics. After graduation he spent 2 years in the army stationed in Germany. In 1955 he began his teaching career at Manhasset High school teaching math to juniors and seniors. He loved teaching and helping students learn. In 1956 Bill married Dorothy Schmitt. They moved to Dix Hills, N.Y and raised three daughters. Bill continued his education at C.W. Post University and Columbia where he got his masters degree and most of his doctorate. After many years of teaching math he changed his position to guidance counselor at the same high school. He retired in 1988. His hobbies included listening to opera, classical music, attending operas, musicals and plays. He also loved to travel. In 1989 Bill and Dorothy moved to Colorado to be close to their grandchildren. Bill loved watching his grandchildren grow and would watch them one day a week. Bill and Dorothy joined Our Saviours Lutheran in 1989. Bill was active in several groups including Faith and Care and Choir. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, brother Robert and his wife Anne. Bill is survived by his daughters, Wendy (Jon) Sawyer, Karen (Jerry) Anderson, Tracy (Bill) Oliver and 5 grandchildren, Lauren Sample (Jason), Sarah Sommers (Luke), Megan Fry (Jon), Amy Oliver, and Emily Menck (Drake). Bill also had 5 great grandchildren, Rhett Menck, Abigail Sommers, Raelyn Menck, Levi Sommers and Kennedy Sample.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Music Department.
The Celebration of Life Service will be Monday June 24, 2024 at 2:00pm. Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church is located at 2000 S. Lemay Ave, Fort Collins, Co.
