He was born in Olton, Texas on June 22, 1937 to Sue Jolly and Raymond Maddox. Cecil grew up in Olton and graduated from Olton High School in 1955. He met his sweetheart, Mary Hazel Phillips, while still in high school and the two attended West Texas State College together. Cecil graduated from West Texas in 1960 with a Bachelor’s Degree, and a beautiful wife, that he would cherish until the day of his passing. He later completed his Master’s at Tarleton State in 1973. Cecil was a coach, teacher, and principal for 30 years in Texas. Following his retirement from education, he opened his own insurance agency and pursued this second career until his mid-seventies. Cecil proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Cecil and Mary wed in Olton on January 26, 1958. They resided in Friona, Texas from 1961 until 2008, when they relocated to Windsor. Together they raised a wonderful daughter, Mika. Family was everything to Cecil. He was very involved as a father, always supporting Mika in everything that she did. He never missed a game or an event. He instilled in his daughter a strong work ethic a deep belief in what is most important in this life: faith, family, and friends. Cecil was a kind and friendly man. His outgoing personality ensured that he never met a “stranger”. He enjoyed striking up a conversation with anyone that crossed his path. He was a man of conviction and deep faith that guided him throughout his life. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Cecil loved to golf and go fly fishing. He also enjoyed scenic drives and traveling. He was an avid fan of the Texas Tech Red Raiders football and basketball teams, and the Dallas Cowboys. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Friona and the Front Range Baptist Church in Fort Collins. He was also a longtime member of the Lions Club in Friona.
Cecil leaves behind his wife of almost 66 years, Mary Maddox, daughter, Mika Schneider, her husband Myron, and their children, Erin and Ian. He is also survived by his brother, Mike Miller and his wife Karen, as well as treasured nieces and nephews. He is greeted in Heaven by his parents, Ray Maddox and Sue Jolly Bennett, brother Jessie Maddox and wife Foy, and by his infant grandchildren, Isaac, Mathew, and Christina Schneider.
Services were held and Cecil was laid to eternal rest on Friday, December 22, 2023 at Resthaven Funeral Home & Memory Gardens in Fort Collins, Colorado. His family greatly appreciates all those who were able to attend and say their goodbyes together, and those that sent flowers or otherwise showed their love and support during this time.
