On September 6, 2022 Carol Pleacher passed away from lung cancer in the care of Hospice in Fort Collins, CO.
Carol was born to Jean and Isaac Jackson in Cambridge, New York. Growing up she was part of 4-H and won many blue ribbons for her sewing and cooking projects. She also helped with the family farm chores and loved her many pets including Harold the basset hound and numerous cats. In 1964 she graduated from Greenwich High School as salutatorian. She continued her education at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, where she was a math major and met the love of her life in calculus class. Carol graduated with honors from Hartwick in 1968 and married David Pleacher 3 days later on 6/8/68, a fitting date for two math majors.
Carol and David moved to Virginia where they were both math teachers in Fairfax County, Virginia. Carol taught math until her first daughter was born in 1971. Carol retired from teaching and became a full-time mom and homemaker. She was a regular volunteer at her children’s schools and church, whether it was aiding teachers, playing the piano for the children’s choir, or teaching Sunday School. She also was a member of the handbell choir and the church choir. In addition to all of her volunteer roles, she still had time to sew prom dresses and bake the best homemade rolls and chocolate fudge.
Carol became “Gram” in 1998 and was a loving grandmother to her 7 grandchildren. She and David retired to Fort Collins, CO in 2006. Carol was a member of First Presbyterian Church and volunteered for McBackpacks, serving local children in need. She was a board member and served as the Director of McBackpacks for five years. Carol spent time traveling to visit her grandchildren in other states and also visited 50 of the 63 National Parks. Some of her favorite parks were Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Olympic. When not visiting family or volunteering, she enjoyed reading and doing puzzles.
Carol is survived by her husband of 54 years, David Pleacher, her 3 children, Elizabeth Cotter (Larry) of Austin, TX, Michael Pleacher (Kristine) of Portland, ME and Sarah Harding (Eric) of Fort Collins, CO, in addition to grandchildren, Kate Cotter of Austin, TX, Jackson and Ben Harding of Fort Collins, CO, and Stewart and Elizabeth Pleacher of Portland, ME. Carol is also survived by her 2 brothers, David Jackson (Pam) of Seattle, WA and Paul Jackson (Judy) of Salem, NY and many nieces and nephews. Carol is preceded in death by her parents and 2 grandchildren, James and Carrie Cotter.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to McBackpack, Inc., Pathways Hospice or First Presbyterian Church, Fort Collins, CO. A private service will be held at a later date.
