I knew Ben from his time in the CSU Statistics department.  I had the good fortune of co-teaching and working closely with Ben for several semesters.  Ben was an enthusiastic and generous instructor.  He thrived on helping individual (grad) students with course material and their own projects.  Ben was such a pleasure to co-teach with.  He was supportive and fun and stayed positive even when there were challenges or much to do.  
Ben loved to talk!  I have many memories of Ben appearing at my office door with a smile that was easy to return.  Even though most of our conversations were work-focused, he frequently had a happy and proud story about family and friends.  Teagan and Julia were mentioned often, but also extended family and friends.  To me this was an indication of the happiness he derived from the people in his life and how they were always on his mind.

Ben was my family adventure buddy. He was always up for something during the Nichols's family get togethers. I truly appreciated his enthusiasm for life, deep philosophical discussions, picking his brain about statistics. Also I loved his commitment to fitness. He always pushed me to work out to my fullest. Ben was an awesome friend and loved his family very much. My life is better for having known him.

Smaller group this year that caused even more conversation.  Ben talked constantly talked about the family and how Teagan was progressing in basketball and golf as he was dripping with pride.  Our planned “home and away series” will have to wait, Ben, but I’ll look forward to the lesson(s) my friend.

Presidents Day weekend in Phoenix 2024 Ben led his team to Fleetwood Cup victory!  For those of us on the losing end this year pressed for a change in the rules after seeing how well Ben was striking the ball on Day One of the three.  For the next two days Ben played from the “Championship Tee’s”, and still managed to spank us all.  Yea, “somebody” was already in mid-season form!

We are deeply saddened that Ben is no longer with us. Ben could light up a room and had a way of making anyone feel like a best friend. We will always remember the day we met Ben: as we arrived at the Sharp’s, we heard shouting and laughter coming from the backyard, and we soon came to find it was Ben and Teagan having a blast on the tree swing, while Julia watched with a big smile on her face.  Wish we could go back to that moment right now. 

To Julia and Teagan, words can never express our level of empathy for your loss. We hope the best for you as you continue to grieve.

Julia, I'm so sorry for you loss.  It's been years since I've seen the two of you, maybe when you left Bozeman.  I think I gave the two of you some boxes as you were leaving Bozeman at that time to start your career.  I had just moved, and there were all these extra boxes.  I remember the two of you coming to pick them up.  All I really remember is the happiness and optimism that the two of you shared. This was one of the first outings we had with you all in 2017. Our memories of Ben will always be as they were on this day - as a kind and friendly guy with an adventurous spirit, and who just enjoyed life. He encouraged that spirit of fun in Teagan and his love for her was so easy to see. Ben's devotion to and connection with Julia was always present and being around both of you just always felt comfortable and relaxed.  We will miss you, Ben, and all of the love & energy you gave to the world.

The sudden passing of Ben reminds us all to embrace each day with the kindness, compassion, and support for others which Ben epitomized. We first met Ben and Julia when they were new graduate students at MSU and admired their drive and their compassion for others. When we recently moved to Ft Collins, we found ourselves living .25 mile away from the Sharps. Ben and Julia generously offered to help us with the move, as well as other projects, Ben kept reminding us that he could help move “the heavy stuff”. 
We send heartfelt condolences to the Sharp family. Julia and Teagan, we’re sending love, encouragement, support, and strength as you carry on during this difficult time.

Gobsmacked by the news of Ben's way-too-early exit. He and Julia were a part of the Montana Hall Family and we had a great time at work. Hate he left so soon as I am certain Ben had many good deeds, relationships and shared memories ahead of him.

I'm so saddened to hear about this. I had the privilege to get to know Ben through work in 2022, and he always brought a smile to my day. I loved our office chats and would look forward to them upon coming into the office. Ben was smart, funny, kind, and down-to-earth. He was a great colleague, mentor, and friend. Ben helped me through a hard time more than once, without even knowing. I could tell by the way he talked about his daughter that he was an incredible father, too. Sending my deepest sympathies and most powerful healing thoughts to Julia, Teagan, and the family.

I had the opportunity to get to know Ben when he taught at CU Anschutz during the Fall Semester 2023.  He'd come in two days a week, and I loved our office hallway conversations.  I discovered his passion for teaching, engaging and learning from students and being curious about what the students were passionate about.    He always brought positivity and kindness to our conversations, and I would feel energized after we talked.   I am happy to have known Ben and express my condolences to Julia and Teagan and the rest of the Sharp family.

I was privileged to have Ben teach me the basics of R during one of my first semesters at CSU. He was kind and personable, he helped us non-statisticians feel confident in learning the material. Ben presented himself as a learner right along with us. 

He mentioned Julia and Teagan whenever it was relevant, something I so appreciated as a new mom. It was very clear the kind of genuine, caring person he was, and how much he loved Julia and Teagan. 

The world needs more Bens, I am so saddened by his passing, and I join the others here in expressing my heartfelt condolences to Julia, Teagan, and the rest of the family.

I remember the good times with Ben hanging out in the hallways at school, on the basketball court, on the golf course, or on weekends at someone's house. I was also glad to meet up with him again four years ago in Fort Collins and catch up.

I am sending healing thoughts to Julia & Teagan, as well as the rest of the Sharp family.

I most appreciate the memories I made with Ben back in Montana -- up in the Taylor's Fork, Big Timber, and Hyalite Canyon. Thank you, Ben, for being genuine and real, for modeling what it means to be a caring father, and approaching life with a gentle sense of ease.

For years in South Carolina, Ben & Julia were our neighbors, living just a few doors down. We remember countless evenings spent together on the front porch, back porch, and around the dinner table. Ben was always quick with a smile, a laugh, and a witty joke. He was always up for an adventure or a philosophical discussion. And he was always willing to help and be a good friend.

As our lives morphed from couples to couples with kids, we had the honor of seeing Ben become a loving and committed father to Teagan. Even before that, he had already become “Uncle Ben” to our three kids and shared his love with them.

Ben was and will always be a member of our family. We will miss you deeply, Ben, but you will always be very much alive in our hearts and memories!

Memories of Ben are primarily smiling in the halls of EDS and running up and down the basketball court.  Still smiling!  On behalf of the Johnson’s we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ben’s entire family.  He was a fine young man and will be missed by many.

I had the privilege of taking a couple of statistics courses taught by Ben during grad school at CSU. Ben's charismatic demeanor, passion for knowledge, and sincere curiosity across all subjects left a lasting impression on me. Our conversations during 'office hours' were not just about statistics; they delved into a variety of topics, leaving us both wondering how time went so quickly. My heartfelt condolences go out to Ben's family and friends during this difficult time.

I will miss watching Teagan and Ben do their handshake outside of the classroom before school. Teagan lit up around her dad. Ben always had a smile and an air of curiosity.  I am sorry I did not get to know him better.

Its with a very heavy heart, I send my condolences to all of Bens family!

He will be missed from the CSU noon hour basketball club, many of us just received the news today.  We're all still in a state of shock as he was such a kind, vibrant, fun, and healthy soul to all of us.

My best memories of Ben will be talking about family (our kids), basketball, and coaching.  He will be deeply missed by all the guys as we had some good ol fashion competition and camaraderie, he added to this and there will be a missing piece now.

May God help you all through this difficult time, and thank you for sharing him with all of us.  Ben will be sorely missed!!

RIP Ben!

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Ben. I only got to know him this past year while teaching - but I am so thankful our paths crossed. He brought such a positive, supportive energy to our meetings, and it was evident even in those our few interactions what a great person he was. Thinking of you all during this incredibly difficult time.

Ben was quiet but had such a sharp wit. He had a lovely smile and laugh. I remember spending many nights playing card games with the Sharp family among other memories. He even attended my college graduation in 1995. It is lovely to read about his fulfilling life after EDS. I take comfort that he and I must have looked fondly at the same beautiful Rocky Mountains to the west since we both resided in Colorado.  I look forward to giving hugs to the Sharp family this weekend. I'm just deeply sad it is for this kind of occasion.

Ben is my best friend when I and my family studied in Clemson. This picture was taken before my family left for Thailand in 2015. His help and kindness will be in my memories forever.

Wayne and I are so sorry to learn of Ben’s passing. He was such a nice young man at EDS. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his family.

This is such sad news. Ben was such a sweet, intelligent, and well mannered young man. He achieved so much in his young life, and we know his family is completely broken-hearted.

We were very saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Ben.  All of the Siegert family have fond memories of Ben from EDS days.  He was always friendly, and smiling, and kind to all.  Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to all the extended family.  Rich and Kathie Siegert, Tim Siegert, Rebecca Dennis.

During our time together in grad school at Clemson, Ben was my running buddy, my biking buddy, and my laughing partner. We shared an office and were constantly cracking sweet little jokes about random thoughts and musings.
I am intrigued that he was working on collecting his grandfather's sermons. As a regular preaching kind of guy (I am a Catholic priest), I would love to dig into a few of these. They might give me an idea of Ben's roots and philosophical under-currents.

We loved going trail running with Ben. His positive spirit was so uplifiting. Rob Maher and I first summited Gallatin Peak in Montana with Ben on July 1 (Canada Day for us Canadians) in the early 2000s.
So sorry to hear about his passing and wishing Julia, Teagan and all family members every comfort.

Many Wednesday evenings I drifted off to sleep listening to my husband (Ron Fleetwood) talk to Ben. Their mutual joy in each other’s company was evident. Ron would frequently tell me funny things that Ben said (with that dry, quick wit). He was so much more than a nephew to Ron, he was a sharer of family history, golf buddy, confidant, and three a.m. call friend. Ben, there is no one like you, you are forever missed and forever loved.

I am so sad that Ben is gone, and I'm heartbroken for Julia and Teagan, and Greg and Sherry, and Ethan, Nathan and Amy, and all the other people who knew and loved Ben. He was just a lovely person, and I have so many good memories with him from our years together at EDS, especially from basketball practices, games and road trips, and our summer jobs mowing the grass there. 

Ben was always sweet and good-natured and hilarious in his own unique way. I don't know when I last saw Ben - it's been a really long time, sadly.  I just wish I'd had a chance to see him in person again and catch up and share some of those old memories. 

I wish I could make it to Ft. Collins this weekend to attend the Open House. Please know that I'll be thinking of you all.
