After Norma’s father passed away when she was two years old, her mother took Norma and her older brother, Howard, to live with Sylvia’s parents, Samuel Cyrus Howard and Harriet Melissa Hatch.
While growing up, she attended school in the Bountiful area and graduated from Davis High School in 1946. She was active in the High School Glee Club and took piano and opera voice lessons. She met and dated Charles Ray Winegar prior to his being drafted into the Army and being deployed to the Philippines. Upon his return home, she married Charles in the Salt Lake Temple, Oct. 8, 1946.
In 1948, they moved to Ontario, OR, where they farmed with his brother, Earl Winegar for two years. During this time two daughters, Charlene and Debra Lynn were born. In 1956, Charles and Norma bought a row crop farm in Fruitland, ID, and began farming on their own. During this time, two more children were born, Dell Ray and Donna Jean. In addition to raising a family, she sang in a choral trio, did oil paintings, crocheted and gardened. She was a wonderful homemaker and cook. Her delicious pies were well known and she taught her pie making skills to many.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in various callings in the Primary, Young Women, and Relief Society.
Norma is survived by her daughters, Debra Lynn Ashton (Wayne), Donna Jean Jemmett (Dell) and a son, Dell Ray Winegar (Kris). She is blessed with a great posterity, whom she loved dearly: 30 grandchildren, 91 great grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, William Howard Riley, and a daughter, Charlene Stokes.
