Jeffrey “Scott” Cunningham of Frisco, Texas, passed away at the age of 55 on January 5, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 10, 1967, to Glen Edward Cunningham and Janeen Bray Cunningham in Greenville, Texas. Scott spent the early part of his life there with his sister, Melissa, their parents, a large extended family and numerous friends. As a young child he attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Preschool and lived the typical small town life roaming the neighborhood, building forts and crawdad fishing with his buddies. He was a fun- loving and mischievous boy, setting off a Cub Scout model rocket inside his house and bringing home a cute black and white kitten that turned out to be a baby skunk. In his teenage years he attended Greenville High School and graduated from there in 1985. He was the kind of friend everyone wanted to have and he maintained many of those early friendships throughout his adult life.
In 1995, Scott met Cheryl Lamberson on a blind date arranged by mutual friends. They were married on October 26, 1996, in Lubbock, Texas. Not long after they were married, Scott’s job with Commscope led them to Hickory, North Carolina, where they lived for 5 years enjoying the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Their first child, Austin Travis, was born while they lived in North Carolina and they happily settled into their new roles as parents. They moved to Frisco, Texas, in 2001 and their daughter, Lindsey Johanna, was born in 2002. Being a dad was truly one of Scott’s favorite things in life. He loved kids and insured that Austin and Lindsey, along with their friends, found a positive role model in him. As his children grew up many of their friends become more like his own children and that was something he truly loved. He was so happy being able to inspire and uplift others and always found joy in that.
In 2009, Scott joined Cheryl in working for Concentra and remained there until his passing. He thrived on the satisfaction of knowing that what he did each day positively impacted the lives of others. He built many treasured relationships during his career at Concentra and found great pleasure in both learning from and mentoring others. He truly cherished the bonds that he made with his coworkers and bosses while working there. Some of his favorite work memories were the colleague appreciation days when he and other leaders would grill lunch for their teams. He loved serving others.
Scott loved sports, especially football and soccer. He was an avid Cowboys fan and rarely missed watching a game. If he wasn’t watching the game with friends, they would text each other throughout the game as they rode the waves of excitement and frustration each week during football season. NFL was not the only football he watched, he also loved watching the Texas Tech Red Raiders. His favorite soccer teams were FC Dallas and Manchester United, and he was looking forward to watching at least one game of the next World Cup in person since Dallas was chosen as a host city.
Scott was an all-around family man who adored his wife and children. He coached both Austin and Lindsey in their early years of soccer and found so much joy in doing so. For several seasons, Scott and Cheryl both played on an indoor soccer team with friends that they had made while watching their children play soccer together. All of the kids loved this role reversal and enjoyed giving their parents a dose of the same encouragement they received from them each game. Soccer was truly an activity that the family loved doing together and the friends made during this time of their lives have proven to be lifelong, cherished relationships.
One of Scott’s passions was grilling and smoking meat. He enjoyed the challenge of trying different cooking techniques, cuts of meat or types of food. Even when he wasn’t grilling he was researching more efficient ways of preparing the meat or talking to his friends about his next cut of meat. He was excellent at it and took great pride in preparing meals for family and friends.
His favorite thing to do in his free time was to talk and laugh with his family or play with his dogs. Scott loved animals and had many rescue dogs throughout his life. He was always sending cute TikToks or photos of animals to his family.
For the Cunningham household, each summer meant some form of vacation, usually to the beach or to the mountains. Some years it was just the four of them, and other years they would be joined by other family members or friends. No matter the destination or the crew, Scott loved this special time with his family and they always made fun memories. The family loved to travel together and made it a point to squeeze in other shorter trips as often as they could throughout the year.
Scott had the best sense of humor. He wasn’t one for dad jokes but he could make anyone laugh with just a few words and a goofy face. His laugh was contagious and his smile brightened up any room. Much of his time spent with friends and family was spent laughing, usually due to something he had said or done.
Lastly, but most importantly, Scott was also a man of faith. He loved God and understood the importance of making sure his family had a strong relationship with their Savior, Jesus Christ. He shared his faith with his family and friends and spent many years serving on the worship team running the video camera each Sunday. Scott found comfort in the words of God and wanted to help lead others to that path as well.
Scott is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl, their children Austin and Lindsey, his parents Glen and Janeen, his sister Melissa and her husband Gary Woodall, and a host of family and friends. He was loved dearly and will be missed beyond words, but loved ones know that they will see him again.
