Richard “Dicky” was born in Richmond, VA in 1942. After graduating high school, he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Virginia, where he was also a member of the ROTC. He was then commissioned as an officer in the Army, proudly served as a First Lieutenant (Infantry) in Viet Nam for two years, before he was honorably discharged in 1970. He went on to pursue his doctorate in English Education, specializing in Elizabethan literature. He initially taught middle school before finding his passion as an English Professor at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), where he taught for 42 years. Once retired, Richard moved to Texas where he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and serving in his church as a Sunday school teacher. He also completed his Seminary degree during this time. He is survived by his second wife, Kay Swarner Thompson; ex-wife and mother of his children, Susan Thompson; their children: Lori Thompson and Rick Thompson; grandchildren: Claire Thompson, Nick Sarro, Mandy Sarro, Joe Sarro, and Mikey Sarro; and great-grandson: Reid Sarro. He is also survived by his older brother and four sisters, having been preceded in death by one of his older sisters.
