J. Pat grew up in Petersburg, Texas with his family and his brothers Terry and Max Scarborough. He spent his childhood years in Petersburg where, in addition to schooling, he played sports and was the captain of the football team for Petersburg High School. He then attended Texas Tech University, where he was a member of the golf team and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He graduated from the Rawls Business School in 1965. Before beginning his career, he served in the U.S. Air Force for a number of years before he was honorably discharged. Shortly after graduation, he married the love of his life, Sue Russell, and in the years following, welcomed their two daughters, Crystal and April, whom he loved and adored.
He would go on to pursue a career in banking with both the Texas Department of Banking and private banking in Canyon, Levelland, and Odessa, Texas. He also served as a Rotarian and taught Junior Achievement classes to educate students on career education. J. Pat and Sue traveled all around Texas throughout their 56-year marriage before settling in Frisco, Texas to be near family and friends in retirement.
One of J. Pat’s highest priorities in life was his faith. He was baptized in Round Rock on November 7, 1999, at First Baptist Church, but was a devout Christian for most of his life. At church, he enjoyed greeting new people through the doors and serving through Sunday School classes using his gifts in banking to help out in any way. He loved sitting under the teaching from his pastors and friends from Prestonwood North Baptist Church where he grew in his relationship with the Lord. J. Pat lived his life according to the scriptures in the Bible and was a daily reminder to those around him of who Christ is.
His greatest passion and joy in life was being on the golf course. J. Pat was an excellent golfer all throughout his life and qualified for the North Texas Senior Golf Association. He enjoyed all kinds of competition, whether it was playing with his friends in a scramble or competing in the Frisco Lakes Club Championship every year. Most importantly, the game of golf gave J. Pat a way to connect with his friends and family and grow the relationships that he valued the most.
J. Pat was a family man through and through, and one of the highlights of his life was loving and supporting his grandchildren. Whether it was going to dance competitions, baseball games, golf tournaments, or wrestling matches, he loved watching his grandchildren do the things they enjoyed. He loved all of his family so well and was an amazing father, husband, brother, and grandfather.
J. Pat is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sue Scarborough; his children Crystal Garrett and husband Jeff Garrett, and April Cole; his adored grandchildren Zachary Garrett and wife Whitney Garrett, Kylie Garrett, Andrew Cole, and many extended family members.
