Dorothy grew up in Kansas until she was 17 and graduated high school from Stockton High School in Stockton, California in 1948. She was a college graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from The University of Denver. She also received her masters degree in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Denver in 1959. Dorothy started her career as a teacher in the San Francisco, California public school district and then after receiving her M.A. in Speech and Language began her over 30 year career helping students from K-12th grade with speech therapy in school districts all over California. After she retired from California in 1999, she moved to Texas to be with her daughter and grandchildren. Here she worked part time as a speech language pathologist in Prosper ISD.
Dorothy liked to shop, sew, cook and spend time with her family. She was very into health and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Until just a few years ago, she did yoga everyday and walked her dogs. She loved to attend musicals and attended many in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter. She was an avid writer and in her free time wrote stories and poems. After she retired, she thoroughly enjoyed taking care of her two grandchildren.
Dorothy was also known to be an amazing writer. Though nothing she wrote was ever officially published, she loved to write stories and poems. She would write a poem for almost every big event in her life and many family members would receive poems on their birthdays. She also followed in her mothers footsteps and kept a diary (or journal) for every year and day of her life after she graduated high school up until the month before she passed away. Dorothy loved all animals and almost every dog she adopted over the course of her life had been dogs rescued from animal shelters. Throughout her life she donated to many causes, but the main one that she always donated to was the Humane Society.
She should be remembered for having a caring and generous heart. She had a great sense of humor and used this humor in many of the poems she wrote. She loved her daughter and grandchildren more than anything. And her daughter and she had a phrase they always used when they would say goodbye,...”see you and love you”.
Dorothy is preceded in death by both her parents; father, Grover C. Munyon and mother, Etha I. Munyon; husband- Isadore Duke Furst; siblings, Arnold Munyon, Melba Beeson, and Lavere Munyon.
