I will forever keep the memories I have of Mr. Watson dear, he was Texas! I remember so many wonderful moments I shared with him and how incredibly immersive his stories were. Middle school was difficult for me, but Mr. Watson took the time, effort and care to reach out and make a meaningful connection. I send my deepest condolences to all that are missing his smile, and kind voice.

While digitizing old videos tapes today, I found a project I did for Mr. Watson’s class on King Ranch back in 1995. It was said he never gave extra credit but he gave me 110 on it; the only time I ever got such a good grade in all my schooling. I googled his name and found he had passed just this last summer and was both deeply saddened but also uplifted, seeing what a great life and wonderful friends and family he had. The man taught me to crack a whip, how to crochet (which I still do), and go the extra mile when you can. Thank you Mr. Watson for being a great teacher to a shy new student. You made 7th grade a fun place to be.

So many memories with Mr. Watson! Cattail candles, picking cotton in class, shooting guns behind the school, the infamous bucket that got put on your desk if you had to use the restroom. I also won a raffle and he took me horseback riding for the first time in my life. Also - fellow 2004 grads - remember when the mouse died in his classroom wall? He had no sense of smell so didn't believe us when we told him it stank to high heaven. He eventually brought in incense to try to get rid of the "smell" people were telling him about. For about a week we had to endure the dying mouse plus incense every day... it was horrible! Eventually the school fixed it but Mr. Watson never believed us until the school confirmed it. He was a teacher like no other. I still tell people about him and his Texas History class to this day. He will definitely be missed! 

There are almost to many memories to share! I will always remember him as one of the best teachers anyone could have! He has a lot to do with me loveing history so much! Always had a way to keep students paying attention. From building our own bow and arrows to shooting the old muzzle loader out back of the school! He will be truly missed 🙏

Mr. Watson was the kind of teacher that  you don't forget.  He was kind and funny and lively and brought history to life.  He was clearly a man with a big personality and a huge heart and everyone who knew him was very lucky.  My deepest condolences to his family.

I worked with Mr. Watson for 7 years, but have known him for 20+ years. He always made me smile, our rooms were across from each other and we would stand in between classes monitoring the hallway and talking about everything under the sun. Our favorite thing to talk about was when we were going to retire, he beat me to it and I was so happy for him when he did retire, I knew he was so looking forward to it. After I left Staley, I would still see him at games for the grandchildren, he always gave me a big hug and asked how I was doing, and of course how much longer till I would be retiring. I told him that I was not as old as dirt like he was so it would be awhile (he use to tell the students that when they would ask him how old he was).

Who better to teach Texas History! Someone who lived it! He was a wealth of information about everything Texas and he loved teaching about his beloved state. I have so many memories, but my favorite one was when I went with him to chaperone the Mesquite Rodeo and I would cheer for the cows when they got away! He kept giving me dirty looks and then later told me that I was crazy, didn't I know what the rodeo was all about? 

Sitting here typing this he is still bring a smile to my face! Sue, he talked so fondly of you and your family. May your grief be a bit less knowing that everything he did was for you and your family. I don't care how old dirt is - he is gone way to young and way to early. May peace be with you during this time.

Till we meet again Mr. Watson - don't you worry I will still be cheering on the cows, I mean Cowboys ;-)

David and I taught together at Staley Middle School for 18 years.  He was instrumental in helping me through my first year when I taught Texas History with him.  He shared his classroom, slides of the Texas Missions, and his stories and insights into Texas that cannot be found in a textbook.  The many hands-on activities we did in class made the experience for the students and me all  the more memorable.

Being across the hall for several years, he could always be counted on to have a full pot of coffee and a song playing in his room, such as "I've Been Everywhere."  David was a great colleague, a supportive team member, and a friend who will be missed.  

I am so sorry for your personal loss and sorry that the community has lost a person who had made such a profound impact during his lifetime.

Life is a journey of sweetness and sorrow of yesterday's memories and hopes for tomorrow of pathways we chose and detours we face with patience and humor courage and grace of joys that we shared and of people we've met; who have touched us in ways that we will never forget although no words of sympathy can ease the  loss you bear still may you find some comfort in knowing others care…

David and I taught together for 19 years and a good portion of those years was teaching Texas History with him.  I always enjoyed the stories he told.  At first I just thought of them as just that-“stories” but the more I got to know him I realized they were all true.  He was an amazing teacher, mentor, and friend.   Thank you for all you did for me and my family.  Till we see each other again.  

David Watson engaged learners by telling memorable stories, using props, and making the history he loved come to life. Students experienced Texas History by traveling through time with Mr. Watson. I am proud to be the Frisco Middle School Principal  who hired him.

Mr. Watson was truly epic. My brother and I both had him for 7th grade Texas History and you don’t forget a man who says such things as “I’m not as old as God but I’m gaining on him.” Or let’s you shoot a musket with wax bullets. He also took his sugar with coffee, which I had the privilege of acquiring for him on several occasions. He was a good man, one of compassion and kindness. May is legacy forever be a blessing to all who knew him.  My prayers that God would provide strength and peace in this time are with his family.

       As most have said and will keep say Mr. Watson was , if not the best teacher I had in middle school.  7 th grade Texas history.  

One memory I have is that Mr Watson asked us to bring money to class one day and we all did, he said now pull out your money and see what is real money. We all did and he say i am. The only one with real money and he shows us money that was backed by gold.

David and I  taught together for about 26 yrs. We were definitely the old timers at SMS.   We even taught Texas History together and those years were among my favorites...he just told me to do everything that he did. I loved it!!!!
I know that David is in Cowboy Heaven!

I write this, knowing that my Dad would be joining in also,  David and Sue helped me and my family so much when I was in the hospital and continued to ask about me for many years afterwards. 

I also got to attend one of the Mesquite rodeo visits which never would have happened but for David. 

I am so sorry for your family’s loss and pray that you will find comfort in the wonderful faith that the family shared in.

I am so saddened to hear about Mr. Watson's passing. 
I had the privilege of having Mr. Watson as my 7th grade Texas History teacher. He was the best teacher - and made the class so fun and interesting! He even let me borrow a book on the Mexican conquest by Bernal Diaz! I was just reading a copy about a month ago and it made me think of Mr. Watson.
 
What a tremendous impact Mr. Watson made on all of us!

I am now 30 years old and I still tell stories about being in Mr. Watson's history class. 
One specific memory I have is him stealing the pencil erasers off of one my friend's pencils in class and wearing them on his fingers like nails. We thought it was hilarious that our old, tough-as-nails, history teacher, who would share stories about cowboys and rodeos, would do such a thing. 

I also share stories all the time about building our own bows to shoot outside for class (I'm not sure if that would be allowed in school anymore).

He really was a one of a kind teacher.

Most of middle school is now a blur for me, but Mr. Watson is still imprinted in my mind after 18 years. He's truly a Frisco legend. Prayers for the family, and may he rest in peace

Mr. Watson was my 7th grade Texas history at SMS. Those who had him as their Texas History teacher can honestly say they had the greatest Texas History Teacher of all time.  His lessons where legendary! I couldn’t wait to be in his class (my brother had him 2 years prior). I will always remember his no nonsense attitude and gentle caring demeanor. He was firm but so very kind. And funny! I am blessed to have gotten to know Mr. Watson even more through the years. He has taught me so much about Texas but even more so about life. 

Sue, I’m am so very sorry for your loss. We will miss him dearly.  No doubt he is smiling down at us from Heaven. Love and big hugs to you and yours!

Condolences Sue and family…Mr. Watson  was the most memorable teacher I had in middle school! I’ll alway remember his class at the end of the hallway at Staley with his Texas belt buckles, coffee mugs, and big morning smiles. I loved learning about Texas, making a real bow & arrow, and eventually shooting a buffalo sized poster via his instructions. Can’t imagine how many students were impacted by his teachings! Mr. Watson was by far my favorite teacher. Texas history was a fantastic class that he made come to life. Like so many others, it is hard to pick just one memory. I remember when he told everyone to flex their forearm, and went around and tested all, telling everyone theirs were like butter. He then flexed his and it was hard as a rock. He then told us about growing up milking cows and the hard work you put in on a farm. He was the greatest teacher and I saw him a few times after I graduated out of school. I never missed an opportunity to tell him how much he meant to me. Condolences to the family on the loss of a great man. 

As a new to Texas middle school kid I was not sure how to cope. I came from a small town in Oklahoma and his love for Texas provided me with an “adversary” I would bring him photos of my trips back home when I would pass the OK state line and he would always say “Thank goodness they let you back in, blue eyes belong in Texas”. He encouraged loved each student he had the opportunity to teach. I remember him fondly as I teach my own kids about Texas! He will be greatly missed!

It is difficult to think of just one memory. What I loved about visiting David's class during the time that I was principal of Staley was seeing his students highly engaged in learning. David always looked for ways for his students to put their hands on any lesson he taught. The students always knew that they would see and feel and create something they would remember for all their lives. One of my favorite memories is being in his class one day and one of his students started to day dream a bit and lose focus. David was talking about cowboy boots at the time and he lifted his leg and put his authentic boot on the student's desk with a loud thud! That kid was back in focus again instantly! David smiled and the kid smiled and was back to learning right away. To all the young teachers out there learning to engage students, just do what David did. Let them experience the lesson with their hands and their minds. Let them create. 

Mr. Watson was one of the only teachers that I truly remember from middle school. I had just mentioned him, this past weekend, to someone, telling them how he had a never ending pot of coffee, always had a squirt gun handy, in case someone fell asleep, and how I always looked forward to going to his class. This was back in 2000 and I still think about him. 

Sue and family, David’s kindness was always there for all to see. His students loved him. He will be missed by many.  Hugs and sympathy extended to all the family. 

Mr. Watson was very much one of a kind, he was the best teacher anyone could ask for. He made class fun and I always looked forward to it, he would always say he was older than dirt whenever we asked his age. He taught us how to shoot a bow and arrow and took us to the rodeo. He was caring, kind and didn’t hesitate to help when we were in trouble. He wasn’t just a teacher to me he was my friend. Fly high Mr. Watson you are loved by many. 

Mr. Watson was not only the #1 Texas History Teacher a 7th grader could even have, but he was an amazing Dad and Grandpa, even if you weren’t actually his kid. All 3 of my children were blessed to have him at Staley Middle School, but also to spend the better part of a decade as part of his family because of a friendship between my kids and his grandkids. He never missed a party, birthday party, cheer competition, ballet and jazz recital, volley ball game, basketball game, football game, church play... on and on, you name it and he was there. He could chat it up if you got on a topic he liked such as the rodeo,  but I remember him on the quiet side. Just in case you’re wondering how old he was, you could ask, and be met with the response “old as dirt”. Whether you were playing behind his house, or out hindering him from picking cattails, his strength and love was always present. I always held the highest respect, even so that I never was able to just refer to him as “David” because he was simply Mr. Watson. A great family man, gone too soon. God Speed.

As you already know Mr. Watson was one of a kind! I have fond memories at Frisco Middle and High school when we were Frisco Coons! We learned so much about Texas history - We made a bow/arrow and shot a muzzle loader AT SCHOOL!  I'll not forget his  Texas drawl, being an advocate for FFA and 4-H, and fun times at his house. Thank you Mr. Watson for the memories.

Both of my sons had you as their teacher at Staley Middle School and admired you.  I didn’t often hear too many details about their school day, but they both shared stories of their time in your classroom.  You will definitely be missed, but never forgotten.  I only wish my daughter who will go to Staley this fall would have had the opportunity to have you as her teacher.

Dear Sue and family, 

We are so sorry to hear about David’s passing. He was a Godly man, loving husband, father, grandfather and teacher.  He taught Sara and Adam both. They both agreed that he was a fine teacher and had only kind memories of him.  Sue I am sorry for the untimely loss of your David. I know you are grieving , but know he is no longer suffering. I love you so much and you are at the top of our list of friends. Sara remembered the first day she worked with you at the pharmacy. You spread kindness to all who who come in contact with you. During my early days of marriage,  David was an encouragement to me. Then spent several years in leadership at Central Christian Church

I remember David fondly. While I only worked alongside him for two years, he was a legend. I was told to sit in on a lesson he was teaching by another colleague, and I’ve never regretted doing so on my conference period. He was impassioned when he spoke about Texas history, and be brought it to life for the students through his words and props. Visiting his classroom was like a visit to a museum. I was overjoyed that I was his relief during standardized testing, as it gave me the opportunity to explore the walls and shelves of his room. He will be missed and lives on in the students and teachers he inspired.

I can’t say much that hasn’t already been said, but Mr. Watson, like most of his students, was my absolute favorite teacher in all the years I’ve been in school. I went to Staley from 2006-2008 and his class is one of the only classes I have vivid memories from. Cracking whips, picking cotton, making butter, and shooting paper bulls with homemade bows and arrows. To put it simply, his class was just absolutely fun. He was fun. He will be missed dearly. 

It was an honor to teach with you at Staley Middle School.  Both my kids had you for Texas history. They thought highly of you and the knowledge you instilled in them. You will be greatly missed. Hugs and prayers to the family.

This is a hard loss for everyone in the Frisco community for sure. If you were fortunate to have this amazing man as your Texas History teacher then you understand how hard losing someone like him is. There are not any were near enough words to describe him with accuracy. He taught us how to crack a whip, took us to pick cotton and learn to make thread out of it with an old spindle he had, taught me how to load and shoot a musket, had us make our own bow and arrows and test them on the football field, tricked us into putting our hands in a bag with petrified cow poo in it, never let us forget that Texas History was the most important history, and even taught me how to weave a basket and so much more. Mr. Watson understood that learning needed to be experienced first hand and it made the difference. He was by far the most memorable teacher I ever had. If you went to school in Frisco you knew who Mr. Watson was. He's definitely sitting with the lord now and sharing with him all his favorite Texas facts and memories. Always remembered, never ever forgotten, as it's impossible to forget. R.I.P. 

Mr. Watson was my 7th grade Texas History teacher long ago, I’m 36 now. To say he made an impact on my life is an understatement. Like most, he was my favorite teacher of all time. There are so many memories that it’s hard to pick just one, so here are a few. Sending a permission slip home to watch a slaughterhouse video, Frontier day making cat tails and churning butter and best of all having 2 students hold a piece of paper and he got his bull whip and he split that paper in half, and one of my all time favorites is when a student fell asleep he would squirt them with his water bottle…. Oh and let’s not forget shooting the flint pistol with the wax bullets….

No other teacher he ever made such an impact on me. He would come to my families BBQ restaurant and eat so I got to spend time with him outside of school as well. We have lost a great one..

Mr. Watson was a legendary Texan who raised proud Texans. Not one single student left his classroom without learning something from him about Texas and life. I still have the knit and crochet items my kids (who are now in their 30s) made in his class. Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge with us. You are missed. 

I was bullied when I worked at the same school as Mr. Watson.  And he knew it.  And he stood up for me and for other teachers who were being targeted.  An act of unparalleled bravery and self-sacrifice.  It meant everything to me and helped me and others survive a toxic environment.  I’ll never forget his bravery or his loyalty to honor.  

He was a true Texan and  true American and he wasn’t afraid to speak his truth no matter the position or title of the person to whom he was speaking. To champion the underdog. And to give every student the very best of himself.  I know it’s probably been mentioned 100 times, but making the bows and arrows was the highlight of every 7th grader every year.  

We were required to decorate our doors for Christmas.  I loved it, but David didn’t.  Especially since he was told he couldn’t use the word Christmas.  So he printed off the history of a battle that happened on Christmas Day and marked through the word Christmas and taped it to his door.  Hilarious. And he got away with it.  

At times he seemed a bit of a curmudgeon, but it hid his heart of gold.  I remember so many times in team meetings when he was past retirement age and he would tell us he wouldn’t retire until his grandchildren were through middle school.  He loved his family the best and was so very proud of his grandchildren.  
He is a Frisco legend and he deserves to be.  Last year I talked to him and he helped me with my garden.  I’m so sad that was our last conversation.  Rest In Peace, Mr. Watson - and enjoy your glorious reward in Heaven.

I was his teacher's aid when I got into the 8th grade. He would take us to rodeos every year in Mesquite.
I have nothing but fond memories of Mr. Watson. While the world will be a little more boring without him in it, I know he left behind one hell of a legacy with every child he taught. 
He will be missed.
