Both parents were proud farmworkers, who lived in Texas, Arizona, and Colorado prior to settling in Selma, CA.
His family included his dedicated wife Kathy Cabrera, his brothers and sisters including Irma Cabrera Casillas; departed, Omero Cabrera and his wife Helen Buzo Cabrera, Teresa Cabrera Sahagian, Dolores Cabrera, and Guadalupe Cabrera Jr, departed.
And the next generation, his sons Joe L. Cabrera Jr., James Cabrera and his wife Cindy, and his nephews and nieces.
Also his grandchildren Kristi, James Anthony Jr., departed, Adri, Julie, Josh, Jordan and Tyson.
Joe Luis attended Selma, CA schools: Indianola, Garfield, Roosevelt, Selma High School and graduated from Washington Union High School in nearby Easton, CA.
He attended Reedley Junior College and Fresno City College, graduating with an Associate of Science degree in Administration of Justice.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1968-1970. He attended several military schools. Serving in Vietnam from 1969-1970 in the U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard, he held the position of Food Services Advisor, and retired as a Master Sergeant E-8 National Guard.
Joe Luis was a member of The Knights of Columbus #844 since 1988. He was a Grand Knight Youth Activities Director for 11 years.
He worked with charities, Boys and Girls Club Special Needs Children and annual Christmas food drives.
He worked for the USPS (Postal Service) from 1970-2010; 40 years as a mail carrier.
Joe Luis was a people person with a big heart. "He loved his family with all his heart."
Luis left a message for his wife; "Thank you Kitty for your love and affection! I will always treasure you in my heart. Until we meet again... God has been good to us."
Joe (Jose) Luis was a caring brother, mentor, and friend; always there when we needed a friend or someone to talk to or lollygag as he would say.
He will always be in our hearts. He is now at home with Mom, Dad, and our Guardian Angels

A recitation of the holy rosary will occur Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 7:00 PM, 836 E Nees Ave, Fresno, California 93720. A mass of christian burial will occur Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Shrine of St. Therese Catholic Church, 1410 N Wishon Ave, Fresno, California 93728. A committal service will occur Thursday, August 15, 2024 at Clovis District Cemetery, 305 N Villa Ave, Clovis, California 93612.
