Betty was born in Puyallup, Washington. After graduating from High School, she went to nursing school in Tacoma, Washington and then worked in Obstetrics and the Delivery Room. She joined the Army Nurse’s Corp in 1942. It was while she was in the Army that she met her husband, Dick Swartz, and moved to Fresno, California where they raised their daughter Betty Jo and adopted a little girl, Judith Ann who passed away at the age of ten.
Betty obtained a Nursing degree from Fresno State College. (CSUF) She received her Public Health Nursing Degree in Audiometry and a Special Services Credential and found a career as a school nurse for the Fresno Unified School District.
Betty considered attending seminary to deepen her spiritual life and believed that reading Scripture and applying wisdom from the Bible sustained her through both challenging and good times over her many years. She was a long-time member of Fresno’s Trinity Lutheran Church.
Betty is survived by her daughters Betty Jo McGinnis, Gayle Swartz (Maggie Bean) Cindy Burger (Dan Pendergrass.) She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michelle (McGinnis) Ricketson, Michael McGinnis (Vanessa McGinnis) Andy Burger (Emily Burger) and Kristen Parker (Thomas Parker) and several nephews and nieces. Betty’s long life allowed her to love several great grandchildren and their children as well. She is loved and cherished, and will be missed by her extended family and many friends.
