Berhe Kassaye

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Berhe Kassaye, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and son, who peacefully left us on November 5th, 2024, at the age of 85.

Born on September 23rd, 1939, in Wukro, Tigray, to Kassaye Woldeselassie and Leteyesus Gebremariam, Berhe was a man of great character, known for his wisdom, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his family, his faith, and his community. His life was a testament to the values of kindness, service, and love.

As a young boy in Tigray, Berhe herded cattle in the countryside, where he developed a strong work ethic that would serve him throughout his life. He later moved to Addis Ababa, where he joined the Ethiopian Boy Scouts and pursued his studies. Berhe earned a diploma from the Addis Ababa University in Social Work, and his passion for helping others led him to work as a social worker at the Ethio-Swedish Building of Technology.

In 1969, Berhe furthered his education in the United States, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare from California State University, Fresno, followed by the birth of his first daughter, Rebecca and a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning in 1973.

Upon returning to Ethiopia in 1974, Berhe continued his work with the Haile Selassie Welfare Foundation, the Social Welfare Department, and the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission. Through these roles, he had the opportunity to travel the world and conduct research that would ultimately benefit his fellow Ethiopians. Soon after he married Jemanesh Said and together they had 3 children: Phaven, Nebyou and Bereket.

In the midst of political upheaval in 1985, Berhe moved with his family to Fresno, California, where he spent the next 39 years. There, he continued his social work with the County of Fresno, while also volunteering his time to serve his community.

Throughout his life, Berhe remained a strong believer and was an active and devoted member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, where he was a founding member of his local congregation. His faith, humility, and commitment to helping others touched the lives of many, and his passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew him.

Berhe is survived by his loving wife, Jemanesh Said, his children Rebecca, Phaven, Nebyou, and Bereket, and his beloved grandchildren Kassaye, Zahara, Malachi, Addis, Amirah, Imani, Zoee, Aman. He is also mourned by his sister, Asnakech Kassaye, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Kassaye Woldeselassie and Leteyesus Gebremariam, and his siblings, Mislal Kassaye and Masa Kassaye.

A Memorial Service to honor his life and legacy will be held at 10:00 am on November 13th, 2024, at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church: 2219 N Orchard St Fresno, Ca 93703. Family, friends, and well-wishers are invited to join us in remembering and celebrating his extraordinary life.

Burial and Interment Service to follow at Belmont Memorial 201 N Tillman Ave Fresno, Ca 93706.

While we deeply mourn his loss, we take comfort in knowing that Berhe is now in the eternal care of God. May his soul rest in peace, and his memory be a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

የአቶ በርሄ ካሳዬ አጭር የህይወት ታሪክ

SEPTEMBER 23, 1939 – NOVEMBER 5, 2024

አቶ በርሄ ካሳዬ እ.ኤ.አ. መስከረም 23 ቀን 1939 ዓ.ም. በትግራይ ውቅሮ ከተማ ከአባታቸው ከአቶ ካሳዬ ወልደስላሴ እና ከለኢየሱስ ገብረማርያም ተወለዱ። በተወለዱበት አካባቢ በልጀነታቸው በከብት እረኝነት ያሳለፉት ህይወት ለእድሜ ልክ የሚያገለግል ጠንካራ የሥራ ባህርይ እንዲያዳብሩ ረድቷቸዋል ። በኋላም ወደ አዲስ አበባ በመሂድ የኢትዮጵያ ቦይ ስካውት ቡድንን ተቀላቅለው ትምህርታቸውን ለመከታተል ችለዋል ። ከዚህም በኋላ አዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በመግባት በሶሻል ወርክ ዲፕሎማ ያገኙ ሲሆን ሌሎችን ለመርዳት በነበራቸው ከፍተኛ ፍላጎት በኢትዮ-ስዊድን የቴክኖሎጂ ግንባታ ድርጅት ውስጥ በማህበራዊ ጉዳይ ለረጅም ዓመታት በትጋት አገልግለዋል።

አቶ በርሄ ካሳዬ ለመማር በነበራቸው ከፍተኛ ፍላጎት እ.ኤ.አ. በ1969 ዓም ትምህርታቸውን በዩናይትድ ስቴትስ ኦፍ አሜሪካ በፍሬዝኖ በሚገኘው የካሊፎርኒያ ስቴት ዩኒቨርሲቲ በማህበራዊ ድህነት የመጀመሪያ ዲግራቸውን አግኝተዋል። ይህንን ተከትሎ የመጀመሪያ ልጃቸው ርብቃ ተወለደች። በመቀጠልም እ.ኤ.አ.1973 ዓ.ም. በከተማ እና ክልላዊ ፕላኒንግ የማስተርስ ዲግሪ አግኝተዋል።

እ.ኤ.አ በ1974 ዓ.ም. አቶ በርሄ ካሳዬ ወደ ኢትዮጵያ በመመለስ ከኃይለ ሥላሴ በጎ አድራጎት ድርጅት ፣ ከማህበራዊ ደህንነት መምሪያ እና ከእርዳታና ማቋቋሚያ ኮሚሽን ውስጥ ሥራ ጀመኑ ። በዚህ የሥራ ኃላፊነት ዓለምን በመዞር ኢትዮጵያውያን ወገኖቻቸውን የሚጠቅም ጥናትና ምርምር ለማድረግ እድል አግኝተዋል። ብዙም ሳይቆዪ የትዳር ጓደኛ እና የህይወት አጋራቸው ወ/ሮ ጀማነሽ ሰይድ ጋር ኑሮ ከጀምሩ በኋላ ሦስት ልጆቻቸው ፋቨን፣ ነብዩ እና በረከት ተወለዱ ።

እ.ኤ.አ. በ1985 በወቅቱ በነበረው የፖለቲካው ውዥንብር ኦቶ በርሄ ከቤተሰባቸው ጋር ወደ ፍሬዝኖ ፣ ካሊፎርኒያ በመምጣት ለ39 ዓመታት ኑረዋል። በእነዚህም ዓመታት ውስጥ በፍሬዝኖ ግዛት አመራር ውስጥ በከፍተኛ ትምህርት በተመረቁበት በማህበራዊ ድህነት ማኅበረሰቡን በማገልገል እንዲሁም ከሥራ ገበታቸው ውጭ ጊዜያቸውን እርዳታ ለሚሻው ሁሉ በተባለው ቦታና ሰዓት በመገኘት አስፈላጊውን እርዳታ እና ክትትል ሲያደርጉ ቆይተዋል።

ኦቶ በርሄ በሕይወት ዘመናቸው ሁሉ ጠንካራ አማኝ ሆነው የቆዩ ሲሆን በኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋሕዶ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ውስጥ ንቁ እና ታታሪ አባል ነበሩ፣ በዚያም የአጥቢያው ጉባኤ መስራች አባል ነበሩ። ሁሉን አክባሪ በእምነታቸው የጸኑ ትህትና እና ሌሎችን ለመርዳት ያላቸው ቁርጠኝነት የብዙዎችን ህይወት ነክቶታል። የእሳቸው ከስጋ ድካም ማረፍ በሚያውቃቸው ልብ ውስጥ የማይተካ ባዶ ቦታ ጥሏል።

አቶ በርሄ ካሳዬ ፍጹም ርህራሄ የተሞላባቸው ለቤተሰባቻው ለእምነታቸውና ለማህበረሰባቸው የማይናወጥ ቁርጠኝነት የነበራቸው ታላቅ ሰው ነበሩ። ህይወታቸው ደግነት እና ፍቅር የተሞላበት ነበር።

አቶ በርሄ ካሣዬ ከውድ ባለቤታቸው ወ/ሮ ጀማነሽ ሰኢድ፣ ልጆቹ ርብቃ፣ ፋቨን፣ ነብዩ እና በረከት፣ እና የሚወዷቸው የልጅ ልጆቹ ካሳዬ፣ ዘሃራ፣ ሚልክያስ፣ አዲስ፣ አሚራህ፣ ኢማኒ፣ ዞኢ፣ አማን፣ በእህታቸው ወይዘሮ አስናቀች ካሳዬ እና በርካታ የእህት ልጆች፣ የእህት ልጆች የቅርብ እና ሩቅ ቤተሰብ ታስበው ሲዘከሩ ይኖራሉ ። ከዚህ ዓለም ድካም ወደ ዐረፉት ወላጆቻቸው ካሳዬ ወልደስላሴ እና ሌትየሱስ ገብረማርያም እህትና ወንድሞቻቸው ሚስላል እና ማሳ ካሳዬ ጋር ሆነው አምላካቸውን በማያቋርጥ ምሥጋና ውዳሴ እያከበሩ ይገኛሉ።

አቶ በርሄ ካሣዬ በተወለዱ 85 ዓመታቸው ኅዳር 5 ቀን 2024 ከዚህ ዓለም ድካም አርፈዋል።

ህይወታቸውን ለማክበርና አስክሬናቸው ማሳረፊያ ሽኝት November 11/13/2024 ( ኅዳር 13 ቀን ) ከጠዋቱ 10፡00 ላይ በሴንት ጆርጅ ግሪክ ኦርቶዶክስ ቤተክርስቲያን አድራሻ 2219 N Orchard St Fresno, Ca 93703 ይካሄዳል። ቤተሰብ ጓደኛ የቅርብና የሩቅ ቤተ ዘመድና የምናውቃቸው በሙሉ እንድንገኝ ጥሪያችን ይድረሳችሁ።

ከሽኝቱ መልስ ፅበል ጼዴቅ እና የቤተሰብ ስንብት ከዚህ በታች ባለው አድራሻ ይካሄዳል።
