Born in Oakland to Thomas Herrick and Sarah Apple, Lorraine was a lifelong resident of the East Bay. A graduate of Hayward High School, she studied and taught piano and excelled at several sports, especially tennis and softball. After working for several years at Southern Pacific in Oakland, she became a dedicated homemaker for much of the rest of her life. Lorraine enjoyed travel to Yosemite and around the U.S., and social activities, particularly dances. She was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church and Women of the Moose. She is survived by husband Robert Soares; son Chris Higgins and his wife Jane; and grandchildren, Allison and Brendan Higgins. A memorial service will be held in March (when established, the date, time, and location will be posted on this site). Donations in her memory to the Yosemite Conservancy are encouraged.
