Flavio “Loveling” Fama Viajar was a generous and loving man. Born in 1931, he grew up in the small town of Janiuay, Iloilo, in the Philippines, where he tended to the family sugarcane and rice farms. He attended the University of San Agustin, in Iloilo City, and the University of the East, in Manila, to pursue his studies as a Commerce major, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1955. He married his sweetheart, Remedios “Remy” Sandico in 1959, and they started their new life and family in America.
While in the U. S. Navy, Flavio was stationed at NAS-Cubi Point, in the Philippines; Jacksonville, Florida; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and NAS-Moffett Field, California. Flavio retired from the U. S. Navy, at the rank of Chief Petty Officer, having served 20 years and was distinguished with several U. S. Navy medals. He continued his civil service career for another 20 years at NASA-Ames Research Center in Moffett Field.
Flavio and Remy loved taking their family on road trips and vacations. But what was most dear to him were the travels he took with Remy to Reno, Nevada. He loved family gatherings and celebrating birthdays. Flavio believed in the power of education and worked hard to provide his children with the educational foundation needed for their futures. Flavio was also generous to his extended family in Janiuay, Iloilo and was known to sponsor nephews and nieces in their educational endeavors and guide those with dreams of better opportunities in America. Flavio will always be remembered as someone who enjoyed parties, giving long speeches, having a good laugh, and dancing. But, to his family – he will always be our “Papa”; a man who was devoted to his wife, family, and God.
Flavio lived 65 years in America, with 53 in the home he and Remy built in San Jose. This year he would have celebrated his 93rd birthday in June and his 65th wedding anniversary to Remy in July. Flavio is preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings, and is survived by his wife, Remy; his son Vicrose, daughters Vida, Vivienne, Patty Lynn, and Tricia Lee, and their partners; fourteen grandchildren, one great-grandson, and hundreds of nieces and nephews.
