Susan is survived by her husband Robert Sutphin; her son Matthew Laptew and his wife Tara and their daughter and Susan’s granddaughter Colette Laptew; her sister Danea Kehoe and her son Eric Mancini and his wife Liana and their son and Susan’s grand-nephew Elliot; her brother George and his partner Amy and his son and Susan’s nephew Ryan Kehoe; and her brother Matt Kehoe and his wife Kathy and their daughters and Susan’s nieces Melissa and Emily Kehoe.
Susan was the kindest, most generous, most loving person her family and friends ever knew. She was an avid reader, a skilled baker and cook, and one who sewed beautiful clothing for her family. She was a cost engineer prior to her retirement in 2019 and was a respected and admired colleague of many in the construction/energy industries.
Susan loved to laugh and she focused most of her time on making the people around her feel good. She was courageous and innovative—although life knocked her down on occasion, she always got back up and on her feet without complaint and with determination and skill.
While her family and friends are heartbroken that she has left us, as her daughter-in-law Tara said, “the universe gained an angel” on November 18. The world is a poorer place without her in it.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Susan will be held on December 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Restaurant 2941, 2941 Fairview Park Drive, Falls Church, VA 22042.
