He was born on January 20, 1949 in Alexandria, Virginia to Francis J. Gayle Sr. and Anna Rae (Myers) Gayle.
Mr. Gayle held employment at Reagan International Airport, Martin & Gas, and Walker Sand and Stone.
He was best known for his self made business "Signs by Sonny", which thrived for over 35+ years.
Sonny was recognized for his style and talent in the Drag Racing Industry for his unique pinstriping, which can still be seen to this day, along with his creative style of lettering.
Mr. Gayle is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 40 years, Betty Gayle, his 4 children, Robert Gayle, Timmy Gayle, Laura McGarry, and Wendy Stout and 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father Francis J. Gayle Sr.; mother Anna Rae (Myers) Gayle; Sister Joan Dewy; and two sons, Francis J. Gayle III (Frankie), and Walter J. Perkins (James).
