Emma Jane Matthews

Emma Jane Matthews, age 94, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA. She was born on September 22, 1929 in Stafford, VA to the late Thomas and Grace (Shackleford) Fritter. Her long life included her first job, putting serial numbers on torpedoes in the torpedo factory, in Alexandria Virginia during World War ll. She had a long career of over 30 years at the National Bank of Washington, where she became the head teller of the largest bank in Washington D.C. This is where she met Eddie, the love of her life and best man god ever put on this planet. She raised her family in Alexandria until her and Eddie’s retirement. She spent many years of her life caring for her mother in Stafford as she raised her family in Alexandria. No one was a more giving or generous a person then Ms. Emma, as the servers and workers all over Stafford County would tell you. It seemed that no matter what restaurant she went to, they all seemed to know Ms. Emma. Her favorite was Chick-fil-A and that chocolate milk shake she had to have. She always said that she respected people who worked hard and were honest. God made her the best and she broke the mold. Now he is getting her back. Predeceased by her parents; husband, Edward John Matthews, Jr. and four siblings: Lindberg Fritter, Thomas Fritter, Jr., Lorraine Hume and Rose Marie Miller. Survivors include two sons: Gary W. Reedy (Diane E.) and Edward John Matthews III (Robin); four grandchildren: Lauren Reedy, Kyle Reedy, Johnny Matthews and Bryan Matthews (Daisy Brosious) The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, 1621 Emancipation Highway, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. Graveside services will follow at 12:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fredericksburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, family asks that donations be made to: American Cancer Society, P.O.
