Addiction isn’t something that is discussed often. Least of all, openly, and when paying someone’s last respects. But addiction is something that can not be ignored. Addiction is something that Stevie battled with, and tried desperately to overcome, for years of his life. And it was this battle that would ultimately end his life, at 28.
Stephan (Stevie) Douglas Hammock, Jr. was a person that you couldn’t help but love. He was kind, and gentle, and caring. It almost seemed as if his goal in life was to make sure that the people he loved knew that he loved them. Stevie was hard working, ambitious, and working diligently towards making his career goals a reality. He loved people. He loved working with and for people. He never shied away from a hug, and was always smiling. And despite his own personal, and very real struggles, he was desperately trying to be the responsible person, and father, that he knew he could be. The one he wanted to be. When you looked at Stevie, you didn’t see his addiction, you saw his heart. You weren’t talking to an addict, you were talking to someone you loved. You were talking to someone that you knew loved you.
Years ago, Stevie placed his life in the hands of Christ, knowing that he couldn’t walk through his personal darkness alone. Faith in Christ doesn’t mean that our battles end, but it does mean that we know a savior who is victorious, and Stevie is in the arms of his victorious savior, finally at peace.
Stevie is survived by his son Fury, his father Steve Sr., his siblings Cari, Cheri, and Titus, his grandmother Marty, and by all of us who love him.
Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday May 31st at Springboro Baptist Church.
