Kathryn E. Hamm passed away Monday, May 9 at Mount Pleasant Retirement Center, Monroe, Ohio where she had been a resident for 24 years. Mrs. Hamm was born April 11, 1916 in Middletown to Albert T. and Aimee Blackie Whittle. She graduated from Middletown High School in 1934 where she was very active in the Music Department. After graduation she went to work for Miami Carey Company where she remained until her marriage to Albert L. Hamm. They were united in marriage on June 15, 1940 at the First United Methodist Church in Middletown where she was a member from her baptism until moving in July 1987 to Mount Pleasant Retirement Village. During her 71 years as a member of First United Methodist Church she enjoyed playing the piano and organ with the orchestra and the children's choir.
After her husband, Al, suffered a stroke in June, 1952 at the age of 37, Mrs. Hamm was the sole care giver for him for over 40 years living in the home they had built in Thorny Acres 2 years prior to his becoming ill. They both had been very involved with the Blue Ball Cub Scout Program. After her husband's illness, she returned to work for 17 years with Diamond National Corp. as a secretary. She retired in 1972. Mr. Hamm preceded his wife in death in December 31, 1998 at Mount Pleasant after 57 years of marriage. Two children were born of this union - Linda and Larry.
Mrs. Hamm's hobbies were gardening, flower arranging, playing her organ and playing bridge with the same group spanning over 40 years.
Besides her husband preceding her in death, their son Albert Lawrence Larry Hamm, Jr. died in an auto accident in June 1971. She is survived by her daughter Linda Roberts widow of James Roberts of Springboro; three grandchildren, Mindy Roberts Gawel James of Tacoma, Washington, James Roberts of California and Jeff Roberts Stacey of Sunland, California. In addition, 2 great grandchildren, Annalyn Kathryn Roberts and Brandon James Roberts also of Sunland, California survive her.
Kathryn's entire family greatly appreciates the years of care and dedication to so many staff members in the care of their loved one.
Graveside services will be held Friday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Woodside Cemetery with the Rev. Karen Fleming presiding. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Life Care Fund, Mount Pleasant Retirement Village, 225 Britton Lane, Monroe, OH 45050. Arrangements are by the Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home.
