Just 5 days before what would have been his 91st birthday, Michael Romney Morris passed away peacefully in Marlborough, Massachusetts. In 2017, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Irene Morris. Surviving is his loving daughter, Ildiko Morris, her husband, Ian Springsteel, and their two children Aniko and Ava Springsteel.
Michael was born on December 3, 1932, in Norfolk County, England. He studied quantity surveying at Leicester University, and during his extensive career was involved with professional organizations including the National Academy of Sciences Building Research Board, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, American Association of Cost Engineers, and the Society of American Value Engineers. He authored articles on international construction costs and methodology and was an expert in the design and construction industry.
Michael began his career in West Africa in the 1960s before moving with his family to Chicago, Illinois in the 1970s to establish the US Division of Hanscomb Associates Inc. (HAI). The firm specialized in construction cost management and worked on large-scale construction projects for both private companies and federal and local government agencies. Michael expanded HAI to over 20 national offices with locations abroad. In 1986, Michael moved the HAI’s headquartered office to Alexandria, Virigina where he worked until his retirement in 1994. In 1995 he started another consulting practice, Michael Morris Associates (now Morris Wade Associates), where he continued to work for an additional 20 years.
An adventurer at heart, Michael played rugby, rode motorcycles, flew small planes, and enjoyed boating and golfing in retirement. He and Irene loved to travel and took trips to different continents every year. One of his most thrilling pursuits in life was climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with his wife Irene and daughter Ildi. But Michael’s biggest joy was being a grandfather and enjoying his family, especially in his later years.
A funeral service will be held in Michael's memory at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, 1 Morse Rd, Sudbury, on Thursday, June 13, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in his memory.
If you wish to notify Ildi of a gift, please include her mailing address: 39 Harness Lane, Sudbury, MA 01776
