He was born in Frostburg, Maryland on November 7, 1960. He was the youngest of the three children born to the late Gratten and Rosalie Jones.
The family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah while Roger was still very young. He lived in and around Salt Lake City for most of his life moving to Florence, Colorado in 2012, and Colorado Springs in 2016.
Roger had various interests through his years. He loved the ocean – La Jolla Beach, California. He skied the mountains around Salt Lake City; skipping school to do so at times. He was a motorcycle enthusiast; his old Suzuki GS1100E was his favorite. Fishing (not necessarily catching) was always on his “let’s go” list.
Roger was diagnosed with Binswanger’s dementia in late 2017. In his last few months, Roger could be found daily on the back deck watching the many species of birds he fed (and the squirrels that his dog, Daisy, didn’t run off). He especially enjoyed the humming birds.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Gratten Smouse Jones and Rosalie (Meir) Jones, his sister Diana, his nephew Justin Jones, and his “Granny” Madelon Whitley. Two months before his death, Roger’s best friend Perry (Pops) Ramquist lost his battle with cancer.
Roger is survived by a brother, Keith Jones. He is also survived by his friend, companion, soul mate, and caregiver, Wanda, and his bird watching companion and close friend Deb (Lyn) Ramquist. He will be missed by numerous friends: his ex-wife and friend Cynthia Jones, the Lujan family and childhood friend Boyce of Salt Lake City, Stanley and Mandy Froberg (Mississippi), Ron and Gael Black (Twin Falls, ID), Clayton and Ella Whitley (North Carolina), Carla Omta and Tony Espisito (Colorado Springs), to name a few. Add to this all the people he made smile in the stores, where he could be heard yelling “Coming through!” as he rounded the corners in his wheelchair.
