Sofia Vasquez (Morado), age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving spouse and children on October 31, 2023, in Fort Worth, Texas. She was born on September 30, 1936 in Mercedes, Texas to Remejio and Viviana Morado. She married Enrique Vasquez on March 25, 1956 in Mercedes, Texas and they have resided in Fort Worth, Texas since 1970. She continued to raise her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and made an impact on her community for the next 53 years. Sofia's greatest accomplishment in life was knowing that she prepared her family for success and happiness and was proud of everyone.
Sofia, known to most as “Ama,” was a fixture in the cafeteria at Daggett Middle School and Daggett Elementary School in Fort Worth School District for 25 years before her retirement in 2001. She was dedicated to her church, St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, having been an active member since 1975, she served in the planning and organization of many church events.
Ama enjoyed cooking, sewing, going to casinos, playing bingo and Loteria (“Chalupa”), anything that revolved with money, and watching her sunflowers grow. She was a lifelong fan of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys- winning or losing - and she loved her some Pudge Rodriguez. She loved to dance and didn’t need any music to dance the day away.
Ama was known throughout the neighborhood to be an amazing cook, and always made room at her table for anyone that might stop by. She had a special talent for making quick meals for anyone that came through her front door. Friends, family, adopted family and even strangers- whether they were hungry or not, she fed them, you ate at Ama’s! Ama was loved by all, if she fed you, you were also loved. If not with her delicious food, then with her beautiful spirit and love.
Ama was the core of her family and of their hearts. She loved her family so much and went above and beyond to express her love to everyone. Her death has left a void that can never be filled. She loved having her family fill her home for huge Sunday lunches, and always yelled at anyone who dared to attempt to help with the dishes.
The impact she made in the lives of those who were blessed to know her, to learn from her and to laugh with her will live on in their memories and in the stories they share about Ama.
She is survived by her husband, Enrique, her children, John (Olivia) Vasquez; Ida (Roy) Hiatt; Henry (Lupe) Vasquez; Abel (Deborah) Vasquez; Sonia (Steve) Glosup; Steven (Dawn) Vasquez, 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins who will miss her greatly.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Remejio and Vivian Morado, her loving son, Julio Vasquez, Great Grandchild, Angel Vasquez, and Joann Gomez,
All are invited to her Viewing & Rosary on Tuesday, November 7th from 6 PM to 8 PM at Laurel Land Funeral Home (7100 Crowley Road Fort Worth, as well as to her celebration of life on Wednesday, November 8th at 10 am at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church (509 W.
