Mayme Evelyn Spinks was the fourth of five children born to the late Louis R. and
Lora M. Herod Spinks on April 17, 1927, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Mayme accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelong member of Corinth
Baptist Church in Fort Worth, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, a
member of the senior choir, and a member of the Women’s Missionary Society.
In 1954 under pastor B.B. Johnson, four young ladies were asked to form a
singing group called the Johnson Four, which included: Mayme Spinks, her
beloved sister, Mary Venable, Shirley Abram, and Modine Branch. In 1966 under
pastor Rev. Dr. C.C. Cyphers, the Youth Day was created. Mayme and her
sister, Mary, were appointed as Youth Directors - a position they held for more
than 30 years. In this capacity, "Ms. Spinks" and Mrs. Venable influenced the
lives of many young people. Mayme was also the first leader of the Red Circle
Girls Youth Group at Corinth Baptist Church.
Mayme matriculated through the schools of the Fort Worth Independent School
District and graduated from the historic I.M. Terrell High School, where she
began her training in cosmetology. She pursued her interest and became a
licensed cosmetologist. Mayme worked in the profession for many years. She
also worked as a Teacher’s Aide and a Media Assistant for the Fort Worth
School District.
Mayme entered her eternal rest on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, joining her father,
