Joseph Garnett Scott was born in Fort Worth, Texas to Frank Shade and Mary Louise Sledge on December 20, 1953. As a young boy, he accepted Christ at an early age. Joe Was A Member of New Mt. Carmel Baptist Church for many years.
Joe attended school in the Fort Worth Independent School District. He participated in football and track in middle school and was a track “star”. Joe graduated from Polytechnic High School where he was an all-district athlete in football and track. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree at Howard Payne University in Brownwood Texas; there he continued a successful football career as a 3-year starter. He obtained his Master’s Degree at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.
On August 25, 1979 Joe married Patricia Mayfield. They had known each other since seventh grade at Morningside Junior High. To this union two children were born, Evin Rhenard Scott and Whitney Patrice Scott. He was also blessed to be the father of Tracy Patrick Carter and Kena Nicole Knox Brown. As a husband and father, he thoroughly enjoyed being around his family. He was always the life of the party, cracking jokes and enjoying whatever food had been prepared.
His pride and joy were that of being a “Master” Gardener. He spent endless hours planting flowers and consistently maintaining a manicured yard. He put just as much thought in planning his daily coordinated “outfits”. Each outfit had to be matched and color coordinated from head to toe.
Joe began his teaching career in the Fort Worth Independent School District as a Physical Education teacher assistant and track coach at William James Middle School. His team was very successful and won many awards on the track. He then became a Physical Education teacher and head football, track, and soccer coach at Wedgwood Middle School. His football and track teams were both dominant on the field and track. He transitioned to high school as a ninth grade English teacher and football and track coach at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. He had a gift in forming positive relationships with his students and athletes. His first administrative position was as an Assistant Principal at Handley Middle School where he consistently supported leadership, students, faculty, and staff. Joe progressed to an Assistant Principal at Dunbar High School. As a high school assistant principal, his days were filled with working with students and faculty along with attending the many games and activities throughout the school year. His first principalship was at Dunbar 6th Grade Center. He consistently had very high expectations for his students and staff. Joe thought it was most important that the building reflected a safe, welcoming, and attractive learning environment at all times. For the next ten years, he was fortunate enough to become principal of his alma mater, Polytechnic High School. His years as being the instructional leader of the Poly Parrot Community brought years of hard work, determination, and accomplishments. For the next several years, his love for fashion and style led him to work in the retail industry. Soon after, he felt a strong desire to return to the world of education as a substitute teacher and administrator. These years afforded him endless avenues of positively forming scores of relationships where he touched many lives throughout the district. Joe thoroughly enjoyed his work. His motto was “People don’t want to know how much you know, until they know how much you care”.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Patricia Scott, his four children Tracy, Kena (Ricky), Evin (Lauren), and Whitney (Quinton); grandchildren Maxine, Connor, and London, Aunt, Willie B Jones, Great-Aunt Macie Bonner and a host of relatives and friends.
